X gunners denied gunners
Former Gunner Jeremie Aliadiere delivered a blow to Arsenal's title hopes by grabbing Middlesbrough's leveller in a 1-1 draw at The Riverside.
Aliadiere pounced with a fine glancing header in the 29th minute to cancel out Emmanuel Adebayor's 17th-minute opener and ultimately ensure Gareth Southgate's men a well-deserved share of the spoils.
Stewart Downing was denied a second-half winner by a fine save from Manuel Almunia but the Gunners also had their chances through Robin van Persie and substitute Nicklas Bendtner.
And at the final whistle there was little doubt which side was happier with the point with Arsene Wenger facing up to the prospect that his side would be even further adrift of the division's top three by the weekend's end.
Wenger had brought back his big guns after the dismal midweek Champions League loss in Porto with Emmanuel Eboue dropped to the bench - although he was given a cheer by Gunners fans when he warmed up on the touchline.
Boro, whose own form this season has been almost as topsy-turvy as their visitors, bristled with commitment and forced a succession of early corners, Adebayor heading one of them inches over his own bar.
And from another Boro set-piece, the ball eventually fell to Adam Johnson on the right side of the Gunners box but the midfielder blazed his shot high into the visiting fans behind the goal.
Almunia also had to race to the edge of his box to snatch a long ball away from Tuncay Sanli before Arsenal forced their first chance in the 11th minute, Abou Diaby setting up Van Persie who bobbled a low shot inches wide.
Wenger's men were slowly coming to life, largely thanks to the persistence of Adebayor who saw a goal-bound effort blocked by Robert Huth in the box before Ross Turnbull parried an effort from Abou Diaby.
But from the resulting 17th-minute corner the Gunners grabbed the lead when Adebayor stooped to meet captain Cesc Fabregas' set-piece in front of goal and sent a low header past Turnbull.
Tuncay tried a low long-range effort in the 25th minute that was easily gathered by Almunia down to his left while at the other end Diaby's effort from another Fabregas corner was gathered by Turnbull.
But French striker Aliadiere drew the home side level in the 29th minute with a superb glancing header from Tuncay's driven cross from the right which gave Almunia no chance.
Boro had a strong penalty appeal turned down in the 35th minute when McMahon claimed he had been tripped by Gael Clichy just inside the Boro box but referee Peter Walton waved play on.
Van Persie missed a golden chance to put his side back in front in the 38th minute when he mis-kicked completely in front of goal after Adebayor had crossed low from the right.
There was plenty more spirit coming from Southgate's men after the break as they continued to press without quite fashioning clear-cut chances, with the excellent Tuncay at the centre of everything.
And Boro came close to grabbing the lead on the hour when Stewart Downing out-paced Bacary Sagna chasing an Arca ball down the left before rifling a left-foot shot which struck Almunia's arm and went out for a corner.
Just when the Gunners were starting to look worryingly lightweight again, they had a fine chance of their own when Diaby sent through Van Persie who saw his left-foot shot slide across the face of goal from a tight angle.
Diaby sent in a long-range drive which was gathered by Turnbull much to the exasperation of Wenger, who was living every moment of a match his side needed to win on the edge of his technical area.
As the action began to tighten, Boro continued to hold the upper hand and Wenger sought to freshen things up in the 81st minute with the introduction of Nicklas Bendtner in place of Diaby.
And Bendtner almost made a big impression in the 86th minute when he sprang the Boro offside trap and hit a shot from the right side of the box which was well blocked by Turnbull in goal.
Gunners vs Latics
Arsène Wenger will invoke the spirit of ’98 to help Arsenal’s push for the
Premier League crown.
A week ago the Frenchman was defending his underperforming side against accusations that their title hopes would be over if they lost at Chelsea and fell 13 points behind the leaders.
However Arsenal came from behind to win at Stamford Bridge and, as Liverpool only drew, they ended the weekend a mere eight points off the pace.
It is still a sizeable gap of course but the 59-year-old has guided a fledgling Arsenal side to the title from much further back. In 1997-98, Wenger’s first full season at the Club, the manager found himself 13 points behind Manchester United at Christmas following a fractious 3-1 defeat at home to Blackburn on December 13.
All seemed lost and there were even early grumbles about Wenger’s future in charge.
However, as it turned out, Arsenal would not lose again in the League until after they had beaten Everton on May 3 and become champions. They added the FA Cup a week or so later just for good measure.
That season is the blueprint for the current campaign.
“We came back in 1998,” said Wenger at Friday’s press conference. “And I am confident we have the quality to do it again.
“I believe that because the rest of the Premier League has lifted their level much more than before and, secondly, I trust my team of being capable to achieve it.
“But to do that we know we have to beat all the big teams in all our games and deliver at a more consistent level against so-called smaller teams.”
The first of those qualities seems to be in order. Arsenal’s best performances of the season have come in their biggest games – Manchester United at home and Chelsea away. However that very fact makes the overall tally of five defeats much harder to handle.
Wenger confidently predicted that the win over Manchester United on November 8 would volte-face his side’s campaign. In fact they would lose their next two games against Aston Villa and Manchester City. It has been suggested that Arsenal’s concentration is better against the major names, if that is the case the visit of Wigan on Saturday is an accident waiting to happen. That’s why Wenger is searching for consistency.
”I feel that last time, after Manchester United, we couldn’t build on the win,” he said. “That was down to the quality of the performance and also I think Aston Villa had a special game.
“Now we want to take belief out of the [Chelsea] game. You could call that game after Man United a coincidence but now the second opportunity gives us more of a responsibility to produce in every game and give us more belief.
“Instead of being 13 points behind, we are now in a stronger position. We want to build on that.
“We have dropped some points against teams who supposedly don’t have the ambition to play in the top four. But I believe every team can drop points. We have seen Liverpool do that at home against West Ham this week so it can happen to everybody.”
Wigan have not beaten a “Big Four’ side in 26 attempts however they are undefeated in their last five games, a run that includes back-to-back wins against Everton and West Brom. Still, the first-team, minus the in-form Emile Heskey, were humbled 3-0 at Emirates by Arsenal’s youngsters in the Carling Cup last month.
“Wigan are a strong side,” said Wenger. “They have Heskey and Zaki upfront, who for me are a very strong combination. They then have Valencia and Palacios who are creative players in midfield. Therefore we need a strong defensive performance.
“Part of our job now is to be more stable at the back because we have conceded too many goals. It is a team effort and we need to take care more about the defensive side of our game as a unit.”
There is a feeling that Saturday is a new start for Arsenal. Despite their marked inconsistency this season, they are still in a position to mount a serious challenge. While Wenger’s men are considered the weakest of the top four it could be argued that if the other three sides were that much stronger the gap would be almost insurmountable by now.
“We had a very good weekend last week,” said Wenger. “That is why we are positive and we want to come back.
“I believe that we have had some inconsistency that was linked to different reasons but I never questioned the deep desire within this squad, nor did I question their potential.
“However there was a lot of scepticism around the squad at the start of the season that affected our supporters, our environment and the team a little bit.
“From now on I feel that we rebuilt enough signs to feel that we are strong enough to do well in the Premier League.”
Arsenal’s second chance has arrived.
Wenger - How close we came to signing Ronaldo
Arsène Wenger has revealed how close he came to signing Cristiano Ronaldo before the winger moved to Manchester United.
The Portuguese international arrived at Old Trafford in August 2003 and has gone to become one of the Premier League’s major attractions. Only this week he won the Ballon d’Or to become European Footballer of the Year
However Arsenal nearly signed him first. Five years ago Ronaldo met Arsène Wenger at the Club’s Hertfordshire training ground, had a tour around the facilities and, just before he left, was presented with an Arsenal shirt with his own name on the back.
The Frenchman even impressed Ronaldo’s mother to such as extent that she recognised him later on television.
But the deal fell through because a price could not be agreed with Sporting Lisbon.
“I had Ronald at the training ground,” said Wenger at Friday’s press conference. “I showed him around and I gave him a shirt. It had got his name on the back.
“But in the end it was a question of the amount of transfer fee between the two clubs. Of course, he has proved to be a bargain [at £12.25 million]. But the price that we discussed was in fact much lower, it was divided by three.
“Also Manchester United had a partnership agreement with Lisbon and Carlos Queiroz [the Portuguese coach] knew him well.
“Since then they have signed Anderson and Nani from Portugal because of Queiroz. It’s like I can sign players from France because I know them well.”
Ironically enough, Arsenal first saw Ronaldo playing for Portugal at the Toulon Tournament in Wenger’s home country. He was mighty impressed but in the end opted to sign one of his compatriots.
“We watched him play in Toulon and we had bought Luis Boa Morte from the same tournament,” said Wenger.
“I saw that he was an exceptional talent but we could not predict that he would become the player that he is. What we did not see in him at that time in Toulon was his capability to score goals. He was something special but he did not score goals, he did not even go in the box.
“At the end of the day I wanted him to be here, but the most important thing is he made a career. He went to Man United and did that.
“I feel he would have done that here too but he is European Footballer of the Year now and that’s fantastic.”
