FA Cup (4th Round): Arsenal vs Huddersfield Town 2-1

Cesc Fabregas came off the bench to net another late penalty as ten-man Arsenal laboured into the fifth round of the FA Cup with a 2-1 victory over League One Huddersfield at Emirates Stadium.

The Gunners - who made sweeping changes from the midweek Carling Cup semi-final win over Ipswich - took the lead when Nicklas Bendtner's angled shot deflected off Terriers skipper Peter Clarke on 22 minutes.

However, influential midfielder Samir Nasri limped off with a hamstring problem, which could yet rule him out of the Champions League showdown with Barcelona, before Sebastien Squillaci was shown a red card by referee Mark Clattenburg for blocking Jack Hunt's surging run.

Alan Lee headed a deserved equaliser for the Terriers, but Fabregas won it from the spot after Jamie McCombe was adjudged to have pushed Bendtner over.

The Premier League title challengers were on top soon after kick-off. Bendtner, who netted a superb goal to open the scoring against Ipswich in midweek, charged into the right side of the Huddersfield penalty area. The ball eventually broke to Andrey Arshavin at the far post, but the out-of-sorts Russian blasted his shot high into the stands.

Arshavin continued to see plenty of possession, and cut in from the left before his low centre across the six-yard was turned just wide by Bendtner, while an angled shot was pushed onto the outside of the post by veteran keeper Ian Bennett.

A stray pass from Squillaci suddenly set Kevin Kilbane clear, but as he played in Lee, Laurent Koscielny got across to cover.

Arsenal took the lead on 22 minutes via a deflection. Bendtner collected the ball on his chest before charging toward the right side of the penalty area, where he fired in an angled drive which ricocheted off Clarke and flew into the bottom corner.

Huddersfield immediately went on the offensive and it needed a deft touch from Squillaci to poke the ball away from Lee as he looked set to net after a low ball into the Arsenal penalty area from the right by Anthony Pilkington.

There was concern for Arsenal when Nasri pulled up holding his hamstring after chasing a long drop-kick from Almunia. Gunners boss Arsene Wenger was taking no chances, immediately replacing the French playmaker with Tomas Rosicky.

It should have been 1-1 on 38 minutes when former Aston Villa midfielder Joey Gudjonsson floated a high ball into the Arsenal penalty area, which eluded the centre halves and dropped for Pilkington, but he headed wide.

There was then high drama when Squillaci was shown a red card, adjudged last man by Clattenburg, after he blocked Hunt following a surging run from the Terriers defender, which had started in his own half. With no other defensive cover on the bench, striker Marouane Chamakh was sacrificed as Alex Song came in alongside Koscielny for the second half.

Arshavin was played clear by Rosicky down the left channel and took the ball into the area before stabbing it into the side-netting.

Arsenal were forced to be both patient and cautious as Huddersfield looked to get forwards themselves at every opportunity.

Arshavin made a brave sliding challenge at the near post to take the ball away from Gudjonsson as he shaped to shoot. The Terriers refused to lay down as they were cheered forwards by their army of supporters packed behind Almunia's goal.

McCombe glanced a header just wide and then Almunia made a brilliant save at full stretch to push behind Lee's header, which look destined for the bottom-left corner.

The equaliser, though, eventually came on 66 minutes when Lee crashed in a bullet header from Pilkington's corner as the Clock End erupted in a sea of blue and white.

With 21 minutes left and Wenger desperate to avoid a replay, Abou Diaby was replaced by Fabregas, whose last-gasp spot-kick had kept his side in their third-round tie here against Leeds.

Bendtner sent a header just over as suddenly Arsenal found some fluency again. The Gunners were handed a reprieve with five minutes left when Bendtner went down in the box under what looked minimal contact from McCombe, who received a yellow card.

Fabregas stepped up to send the 'keeper the wrong way and once again save his team's blushes.

Carlos Vela joins West Brom on loan

West Brom have secured the loan signing of Arsenal striker Carlos Vela until the end of the season.

The 21-year-old Mexico international, who went to last year's World Cup, has been a peripheral figure for the Gunners this season, making just 13 appearances, with his brace against Braga in September the last of his three goals so far.

''I'd like to officially welcome Carlos, who is an exciting signing for this club,'' said Baggies boss Roberto Di Matteo. ''Carlos is a new attacking option for us who can play both centrally and in the wide areas.

''He also has great technical ability and pace and we're hoping he can make a big impact during the remainder of the season.

''There's no doubt that Carlos has the potential to become a great player and it will hopefully be a win-win situation, where we help him by giving him game time in the Premier League while he helps us achieve our goal.

''Having said all that, we have to remember he is still a young boy learning his trade and we will be giving him all the support he needs during his time here.''

In total he has made 62 appearances for Arsene Wenger's men, scoring 11 times. He has previously gone on loan to Salamanca and Osasuna in Spain, and will give Di Matteo an extra attacking option as he looks to stave off relegation.

Vela will not be available to face his parent club when the two meet in the Premier League on March 19.

FA Cup: Arsenal v Huddersfield Town - Preview

By Richard Clarke

“We can call him a ‘super pioneer’ because he really turned this Club into one that was ready for the modern era. He was ahead of his time and he was certainly the most influential manager.”

Surprisingly those words were spoken by, not about, Arsène Wenger this week.

The Arsenal manager was actually referring to Herbert Chapman, a man who brought the first real success to the newly-installed North London side when he arrived from Huddersfield in the summer of 1925.

The Yorkshireman won four League titles – two with each team – and two FA Cups, the second of which, in 1930, was Arsenal’s first major honour.

The side they beat in that final was Huddersfield Town so the Terriers’ visit to Emirates Stadium on Sunday for a Fourth Round tie in the same competition is heavy with history.

“It is a big tradition,” admitted Wenger at his press conference on Friday. “We even went to play a friendly with them in pre-season [in 2008] on the demand of our chairman because there is a long traditional link between Huddersfield and Arsenal.

“We are a modern club but have as well a big respect for tradition. It has a special meaning because Chapman was the most influential manager at this Club. So we have of course big respect for that.”

The current Huddersfield side are third in League One and gunning for promotion under Lee Clark. They have lost only once in their last seven games and beat Cambridge, Macclesfield and Dover to reach the Fourth Round. Arsenal’s 17-year-old striker Benik Afobe is about to start another loan spell at the Galpharm Stadium but is ineligible for this game because, unlike Sanchez Watt in the last round against Leeds, his deal was not for a full season.

Arsenal have had trouble negotiating Championship sides recently but they have not lost to a side outside the top two tiers since Wrexham in 1992 – which was historic for entirely different reasons.

Wenger’s side is likely to be much-changed from one that beat Ipswich to reach the Carling Cup Final on Tuesday. After that game, the manager said he would like to play one side against Huddersfield and an entirely different one against Everton in the Premier League 48 hours later.

He is a few players short of being able to do that but the return of Tomas Rosicky (sickness), Abou Diaby (calf), Manuel Almunia (ankle) and Sebastien Squillaci (hamstring) means he has more options at his disposal.

The Spaniard’s comeback after fourth months out is particularly intriguing given that, on Friday, Wenger said Wojciech Szczesny was the current No 1 and the gloves were his to lose. A decision on Sunday’s custodian will be made on the morning of the match.

This will be the ninth game of a massive January for Wenger’s side in every sense. In their 124 years, Arsenal have never played so many matches in the first month of the year. And, apart from a goalless draw with Manchester City in which they dominated, Wenger’s men have a 100 per cent record. Remember they may have lost to Ipswich and drawn with Leeds in individual games but the won both ties.

In those eight games they have conceded just three times (all in cup competitions) and have scored 16 goals – including three in each of their last four games.

“That's a consequence of our style which is always trying and go forward and score goals,” said Wenger. “Some periods we are a bit less successful at doing it. But not now.”

It may be ‘only’ the Carling Cup to some but Arsenal’s players have had a sense of euphoria all this week. How can you dismiss a trophy you have never won? Or, for many of them, how can you dismiss a trophy when you have never won one at all?

But one thing is certain - Arsenal’s season will not be judged on the Carling Cup alone when they are Manchester United’s closest rivals in the Premier League and the Champions League is in the Knockout Stage. That does leave two questions of course. Where does the FA Cup fit in? And can Arsenal realistically go for all four trophies?

“Well quadruple is not a bad word,” said Wenger, answering the second part. “It is a very good word but, of course, we are far from that.

“What is good is that we are involved in all competitions and we are hungry to do as well as we can.

“What can we do? We don't know. But we are happy because we won our last game. We are on a good run and feel we have a good confidence level and a good attitude in the whole squad.
“We are getting stronger and stronger, so this is what we want to do.

“Of course if we are involved in the four competitions we need a super-realistic approach, focus on the next game and just try to win it.

“You build the confidence in the team slowly and you lose it very quickly. One big bad result and you are down very quickly. So it's important to keep our feet on the ground and to show we have learned from Leeds and Ipswich how difficult these games can be.

“But the FA Cup is very important for us. Did you see the team we played at Leeds? That just means it has an importance, we could have gone to Leeds and said ‘OK, we go with a reserve team’.

“But we went with a first team squad and we had everybody fired up and playing. We had to fight to qualify and so we focus on Huddersfield right now.”

Of course, those were Wenger’s words but they could have easily come from Chapman.

It seems the ‘super-pioneer’s' legacy is in good hands.

One Of The Fantastic Four Dies, Leaving A Not-So-Fantastic (And Awkward) Threesome

The title was just meant to throw you off, it's not actually the Invisible Woman that dies. Or is it?

Because Marvel is now owned by Disney and Disney hasn't done anything right since The Little Mermaid, the death of one of the Fantastic Four was leaked prior to the comic's (issue #587) release later this week. Who was it? Gaaaaah, I don't know if I should tell!

Though the majority of single-issue comic book sales are still largely seen as the product of a niche market, the biggest events in the lives of America's superheroes still rate with national news organizations hungry for an accessible water cooler hook. So it should come as no surprise that Marvel Comics has revealed to the Associated Press which member of their first family dies in "Fantastic Four" #587 in a story that's being picked up by several newspapers...

Carling Cup: Gunners off to Wembley

Arsenal booked their place at Wembley as they finally broke down Ipswich to win 3-0 in the Carling Cup semi-final second leg at the Emirates Stadium.

The Championship club were protecting a slender 1-0 lead from a fortnight ago in Suffolk, and defended resolutely to frustrate the Gunners for more than an hour.

However, Nicklas Bendtner finally ended their resistance with a fine individual goal before Laurent Koscielny headed in a second and captain Cesc Fabregas kept Arsene Wenger's men on course for a first trophy since 2005.

Nine thousand Ipswich fans had made the journey from Suffolk, perhaps more in hope than genuine expectation of a cup shock.

Arsenal, who named a strong side, made a positive start, and Van Persie - who missed the first leg at Portman Road, but had struck six goals in his last three appearances - fired a volley just over the angle from Bacary Sagna's cross.

Fabregas used his programme notes to hit back at claims from Roberto Martinez he had dived to win a penalty during the 3-0 Barclays Premier League win over Wigan here on Saturday.

After 10 minutes, the Spain World Cup winner burst into the Ipswich box and went down under an outstretched arm from Gareth McAuley, but referee Mark Halsey waved play on.

McAuley was then in the thick of the action at the other end, heading over a deep free-kick into the Arsenal danger zone.

There was then a stoppage after Sagna needed treatment following an accidental clash of heads with his keeper Wojciech Szczesny when trying to defend.

The France international was unable to continue with what looked like possibly a broken nose, so Emmanuel Eboue replaced him after 18 minutes.

A clever flick from Van Persie released Fabregas into the right side of the Ipswich area, but his low shot was saved at the near post by Marton Fulop.

Van Persie then went within inches of levelling the tie when his header crashed against the bar from Bendtner's right-wing cross.

Bendtner's shot was blocked after Fulop dropped a free-kick in the six-yard box as the Tractor Boys continued to defend resolutely.

Jack Wilshere chipped the ball through to Fabregas in the left side of the box, but after bringing it down superbly, the skipper could only drill a low shot across the face of goal - after which the travelling fans took great delight in chanting `1-0 to the rugby team' in reference to Fabregas' post-match comments following the first leg.

It was more of the same at the start of the second half, as Arsenal had plenty of possession, but were faced with trying to break down an organised resistance, Ipswich deploying two banks of four men behind the ball.

The pressure, though, was relentless and when the breakthrough finally came after 61 minutes, it was thanks to a moment of real quality from the much-criticised Bendtner.

A quick ball from Wilshere out to the left was brought down superbly by the Dane, who then cut inside with a deft backheel before curling a low shot into the bottom right corner.

Before Ipswich could recover, it was 2-0.

Fulop came to punch a left-wing corner from Arshavin, but got nowhere near the ball as Koscielny headed in from six yards.

Chants of `Wembley' started to ring out around the stadium as the Gunners fans started to dream of an end to their six-season trophy drought.

There was a warning, though, when substitute Jason Scotland broke into the left of the penalty area and his angled shot was saved at the near post.

Fabregas, however, ended any hopes of a comeback after 77 minutes when he slotted home after being played in by Arshavin following a surging 40-yard run.

EPL: Arsenal vs Wigan Athletic 3-0

Robin van Persie smashed a hat-trick as Arsenal kept up their Barclays Premier League title challenge with a 3-0 win over 10-man Wigan at the Emirates Stadium.

The Gunners should have been out of sight by half-time, but had only van Persie's 21st-minute strike to show for their dominance as Latics keeper Ali Al Habsi made a string of fine saves.

The in-form Dutchman eventually fired in a second just before the hour, but then blasted a penalty over the bar after Gary Caldwell had been sent off for pulling back Cesc Fabregas.

However, van Persie duly completed his hat-trick with five minutes left to make it six in the last three games.

Arsenal - with five changes from the starting XI which beat Leeds in their FA Cup third round replay on Wednesday night - started brightly.

Wigan keeper Al Habsi had to be alert as he got down quickly to save Samir Nasri's shot on the turn.

The Omani then produced a simply stunning one-handed block to palm away a point-blank shot from van Persie.

Wigan were in danger of being overrun, but to their credit the visitors continued to try to go on the offensive themselves.

Walcott dashed to the goalline and pulled the ball back for Fabregas, who looked set to open the scoring, only for Caldwell to produce a superb block.

Arsenal eventually took the lead on 21 minutes after more patient build-up.

Alex Song released van Persie, who was just onside, into the left of the penalty area - and the Dutchman fired in his fourth goal in three games.

Wigan continued to be pressed back in their own half. However, Arsenal could not make the most of possession.

Al Habsi denied Fabregas with another fine save before Maynor Figueroa made a last-gasp tackle just as the skipper looked set to slot the ball in at the near post.

Arsenal should have been 2-0 ahead when Walcott raced clear down the centre, but squared to Fabregas rather than try to round the keeper. Mohamed Diame made a saving tackle before Steven Caldwell threw himself of Walcott's follow-up shot from the loose ball.

Al Habsi tipped over a 20-yard drive from Nasri, then kept out Fabregas' low shot as the Gunners cut Wigan open time and again.

However, much to the frustration of the home fans, Arsenal were once again unable to turn their dominance into goals before the interval.

Wigan were much more competitive at the start of the second half following the introduction of Franco Di Santo, replacing Diame.

Slowly, though, the Gunners regained dominance as Walcott nipped into the right channel, but the angle was too high and his shot flew wide.

When the second Arsenal goal finally came on 58 minutes, it was simple, yet breathtaking.

Fabregas chipped a 30-yard ball over the defence, and van Persie got ahead of Gary Caldwell to crash a left-foot volley past Al Habsi at the far post.

Jack Wilshere charged forwards, but then drilled a low shot wide from 20 yards.

Arsenal were awarded a penalty on 69 minutes when Gary Caldwell pulled back Fabregas in the six-yard box, and was shown a red card.

Van Persie stepped up for his hat-trick, but uncharacteristically blasted the spot-kick high over the crossbar.

The Dutchman almost made amends with a curling effort from 20 yards which struck the post.

Song's low shot from 20 yards flew just wide before van Persie finally secured the matchball when he smashed home from a tight angle after Walcott had held the ball up in the penalty area.

Arsenal moved above Manchester City, who play later this evening, and continued their momentum ahead of the Carling Cup semi-final second leg against Ipswich here on Tuesday night, when you feel a slender one-goal lead for the npower Championship side is unlikely to be enough to keep the Gunners from Wembley.

Knokkers: Like Pool, But With Bowling Balls

Knokkers (slogan: Knokkers are big fun!) is a giant game of pool with no sticks and bowling balls instead of billiard ones. [Insert 10lb balls joke here] It's the brainchild of Steve Wienecke, who undoubtedly stayed up countless nights trying to think up a better name than Big Balls Bangin'. (I would've just run with it, Steve).

...the first playable version was built in his backyard in Fredericktown, Missouri using loads of railway ties, gravel and of course concrete. The game is played pretty much exactly like standard 8-ball pool, the only real difference is that before your shot you're allowed to pick up and move the cue ball, though you can't move your feet once you've touched it. Steve is currently working with investors as they design a portable version of the game that doesn't require a permanent backyard investment, including more durable 6-pound balls that can stand up to the constant collisions experienced during a regular game.

Arsenal v Wigan Athletic - Match Preview

By Richard Clarke at London Colney

If the Premier League title is won in the mind as much as on the pitch then, according to Arsène Wenger, Arsenal have a great chance.

A pessimist would look at the table right now and suggest it is all in the hands of leaders Manchester United. They are ahead of their City rivals on goal difference with two games in hand. Meanwhile third-place Arsenal are two points behind having played one match more.

But it is not just the maths, it is the relentless inevitability with which Sir Alex Ferguson's side have gone about their business this season. They have scrapped and scraped their way into a dominant position without ever really showing the authority of previous years. Right now the prevailing view is that they will have too much experience, determination and sheer force of will for their rivals.

As you might expect, Wenger disagrees.

The Frenchman has put his side into one of its best positions in years. They retain an interest in all four competitions after beating off the lively challenge of Leeds on Wednesday night's FA Cup Third Round replay and, next week, will reach their first Final in four seasons if they can overturn a 1-0 deficit against Ipswich in the Carling Cup.

In between, they entertain Wigan on Saturday.

Roberto Martinez's side are the last Premier League team to breach the Arsenal defence. It came in the final stages of the clash at the DW Stadium on December 29 when the visitors were leading 2-1 and the home side were down to ten-men.

Had they held on, Wenger's men would be top right now.

The manager knows they cannot be so wasteful at Emirates Stadium - and this is where that mentality comes in.

"We have shown since the start of the season that we can beat everybody," he said. "And now we are getting stronger and stronger.

"We have a stronger belief than at the start of the season and our togetherness is better too. I believe there is more to come out from this team and I personally am convinced we will be stronger and stronger.

"Remember this team have grown up together - there is a natural understanding. There is a strong bond, I feel, because most of these players have been here since they were 15 or 16 years-old and they are hungry for success. They want to show they can do it.

"On the mental front, I have no problems. For us it is just important to show we have the mental resources to focus every three days now.

"If you look at the table, we are in a strong position. We have 16 games to go for us, nine at home and seven away. We know our home form can make a huge impact on our success and that's why, if it's Wigan or anybody else, we want the three points at home.

"Since the start of the season we have learned that there is no room for taking anybody lightly because everybody can beat everybody in this League."

Marouane Chamakh (knee) and Denilson (hip) have brushed off the most minor of knocks. It means Wenger can choose from the same squad that won so well at Elland Road in midweek. Abou Diaby (calf) and Sebastien Squillaci (hamstring) are being lined up for next weekend's FA Cup tie against Huddersfield.

Robin van Persie's late goal on Wednesday, on top of two at Upton Park last Saturday, put pressure on Wenger to start him.

"I think he is 95 per cent there now," said the manager. "He showed that in the last game at West Ham. When he came on at Leeds you saw that he is sharp so I am quite confident that he is there."

Wigan are third from bottom and have a famously poor record against Arsenal. Last season's never-to-be-forgotten 3-2 comeback at the DW Stadium is their only victory in 11 Premier League meetings between the two sides. Wenger's men have won eight, including all five on home soil.

Martinez's men are the current draw specialists in the top flight - five of their last seven games have ended level. A tally of 19 goals may make theirs the poorest attack in the top-flight but Hugo Rodellega and, before he was sent off, Charles N'Zogbia caused Arsenal significant defensive problems four weeks ago.

This time last season, Wenger's side were better off - leading the Premier League with five more points to their name. But the manager argues his side are in a superior position now.

"We had a good chance three years ago but, apart from that, this is the closest we have been [in the title race] for a long time," said the 61-year-old.

"We are in a period where we want to show we can get our best out in every single game. When you play so many games, that is not easy, but we are motivated to give our best in all the competitions that is for sure.

"What can we win? We are not in a position to say that. We are just in a situation where we want to give our best and after that we will see where we end up. But it is mid-January and we are still in all four competitions so let's go for it.

"But any victory on Saturday will be a fantastic result for us."

Money Can't Buy Class (Or In This Case Even A Decent Car!): $675K Diamond & Gold Fiat

Seen here looking like the gaudy lovechild of a Smart Car that rear-ended a Mini, a $675,000 diamond and gold Fiat 500C was recently commissioned by a Chinese business man (with zero negative taste and decency).

The car is set to be called "La Dolce Vita Gold and Diamonds 200hp" and - as you may already have guessed - features heavy use of diamonds and gold, and has been tweaked to give 200hp.

The exterior features 24k gold in the paint and gold thread in the hood. Inside, meanwhile, there is teak on the floor, dashboard and steering wheel, and 24k gold controls and inserts on the dash. Tasteful.

There is one genuinely interesting innovation, however - space on the dash for an integrated iPad. Sadly, that's been diamond-encrusted too.

First Official Look at Captain America's Hero Outfit

As a companion to yesterday's reveal of dark, moody Spider-Man, here's an official look at the full ensemble of our new Captain America, Chris Evans, flanked by G.I. Joe characters, as he appears in the new Entertainment Weekly.

While most of his recent superhero friends may be wearing latex, fake metal, and/or layers of post-production CGI, Captain America is going with this quilted fabric his mom assures him will be much warmer when he's playing outside. Let's hope she left room for him to grow into it, too.

Here's Your Spider-Man

Beating all the eager camera phones to the punch, Columbia has gone ahead and released an official image of new, lankier, British Spidermin Andrew Garfield in most of his costume. Honestly, I'm pretty sold.

The costume is a little stylized without getting too obnoxious about it, and the backpack and tousled hair are doing a surprisingly alright job convincing me this nearly 30-year-old guy might be in Movie World high school. In spite of not yet seeing the mask, I'm giving this an approving frown with deliberate nod.

FA Cup: Leeds vs Arsenal 1-3

Samir Nasri underlined his credentials as an early contender for player of the season with a sparkling display to help Arsenal finally get the better of Championship side Leeds.

Nasri scored the Gunners' opener and was their creative heart as this time Leeds failed to cope with qualities of their Premier League opposition.

Bacary Sagna's cracking drive made it 2-0 and Leeds were left only with the memories of Bradley Johnson's blistering strike to sweeten the bitter pill of defeat, especially when Robin van Persie came off the bench to round off the scoring.

After struggling against Leeds at home in this FA Cup third-round contest, and having been embarrassed at Ipswich in the Carling Cup last week, this was a far more comfortable ride for Arsene Wenger's side.

That was thanks in large part to France international Nasri, whose presence in midfield looked hugely reassuring for the Gunners.

It took less than five minutes for the 23-year-old to make a telling impact and score his 14th goal of the season.

Andrei Arshavin, who had a point to prove after some dismal recent performances, played a key role in the move, with Marouane Chamakh stepping over his pass to allow Nasri to dance through and slip the ball neatly to the side of Kasper Schmeichel.

The Gunners did not let up however and Leeds were chasing elusive shadows for much of the game.

Simon Grayson's men were kept in it by Schmeichel's stunning save, scooping Chamakh's downward header off the line. The Moroccan continued, however, to be a thorn in Leeds' side with a blistering run down the right and penetrating ball that somehow Arshavin failed to turn home.

The Russian tried to make amends but once more Schmeichel came to the rescue, turning aside his fierce low strike.

Anything Arshavin could do, Nicklas Bendtner was keen to show he could do better, but the Dane's miss from Sagna's pinpoint cross was if anything even more ghastly than Arshavin's minutes earlier.

"That's why you're 52," chanted the Leeds fans in reference to Bendtner's shirt number.

When Sagna drilled home into the top corner with the outside of his right foot to make it 2-0 it seemed as though Arsenal were home and dry.

But Leeds, who had barely ventured into the Gunners' half, were suddenly back in the running thanks to a quite stunning long-range strike by Johnson, who began his football life an Arsenal schoolboy but was released as a 15-year-old.

Johnson, who made his way to Leeds via non-league football, Cambridge and Northampton, will not have hit a more glorious shot in his life. Struck with the left foot from 30 yards out, it screamed into the top right corner with goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny clawing at thin air.

That gave Leeds some hope at the break but Nasri picked up the threads again immediately. His lovely disguised pass put in Alex Song inside the opening 30 seconds, but Schmeichel beat away the strike.

Schmeichel then had to be alert to keep out Nasri's free-kick but the Arsenal hordes kept coming. One beautifully-crafted move saw Nasri so nearly send Arshavin clear only for a last-ditch interception by Robert Snodgrass.

Arshavin's desperation for a goal can only have increased when he tried a first-time shot from Song's pass only to see it soar not only over the bar but actually out of the ground, to raucous jeers from the Leeds fans.

Max Gradel and Billy Paynter had had no change out of the Arsenal defence but they almost combined to good effect with 20 minutes left to serve the visitors a warning that this game was not over.

Perhaps stung by that, Wenger left nothing to chance as he sent Cesc Fabregas and Van Persie on for the last 15 minutes, and Spaniard Fabregas almost immediately forced Schmeichel into a save from a direct free-kick.

Van Persie's first touch was even more decisive, the Dutchman heading powerfully home from Bendtner's cross to finally end the contest.

Arsenal had triumphed 4-1 in their last three appearances at Elland Road and Kieran Gibbs looked set to bring about a repeat scoreline with his first goal for the Gunners but his low effort trickled wide.

Arsenal duo Samir Nasri and Cesc Fabregas targeted FA Cup glory after their third-round replay win at Leeds.

Nasri told ITV1: "We wanted to start really strongly. We scored after five minutes and tried to play our game even though the pitch was a little difficult.

"We want to win every competition and this cup is really important to us."

The Gunners remain in contention for success in four different competitions this season and club captain Fabregas echoed his midfield partner's sentiments.

"As Samir said, we want to go all the way in every competition," he added. "We didn't know too much about (Leeds) but they played very, very well at the Emirates, but tonight we were much superior to them. They were dangerous for a spell after they scored but Arsenal played fantastic football."

Leeds goal-scorer Bradley Johnson said: "We are disappointed but we gave them a good run for their money again and we'll take a lot of positives from it."

"I've not scored many like that but I've scored from outside the box before and I've been told if I get the opportunity, shoot because they know I can do that - I do it every day in training - but we lost the game so it doesn't count for anything really."

Too Far, You Went There: The TRON Audi R8

West Coast Customs teamed up with Monster Cables (WTF?!) to produce a TRON-themed Audi R8 because -- well -- I don't know why. Something about poor decision making and overpriced wires.

The car itself is an Audi R8, a car whose electric version has graced the digital pages of CNET UK once before, thanks to its clever wireless-charging capabilities. Very sneaky stuff.

This version of the R8, however, isn't quite so subtle -- with glowing rims, glowing vents, a glowing back seat and a chrome finish so perfectly reflective that you can check your hair and makeup in the car's bonnet. All the glowing bits gradually fade through a series of colours too, for added Tron-style excellence.

Those clever West Coast Customs lads have certainly done a good job adhering to the source material, even if this car is so shiny it's not likely to be road legal -- imagine catching an eyeful of your own headlights reflected in this beast...

CALL ME WHEN YOU HAVE A DINOSAUR: Scientists Promise Woolly Mammoth Cloning

Thanks to a new breakthrough in cloning technology, scientists are claiming we could have real-life woolly mammoths lumbering around Jurassic Pleistocene Parks in as little as four years. Really? THEN CUT THE CRAP AND GIVE ME A DINO ALREADY YOU WOOLLY WANKERS.

Previous efforts in the 1990s to recover nuclei in cells from the skin and muscle tissue from mammoths found in the Siberian permafrost failed because they had been too badly damaged by the extreme cold.

But a technique pioneered in 2008 by Dr. Teruhiko Wakayama, of the Riken Centre for Developmental Biology, was successful in cloning a mouse from the cells of another mouse that had been frozen for 16 years.

Now that hurdle has been overcome, Akira Iritani, a professor at Kyoto University, is reactivating his campaign to resurrect the species that died out 5,000 years ago.

He intends to use Dr Wakayama's technique to identify the nuclei of viable mammoth cells before extracting the healthy ones.

What, No Jacuzzi?!: Swiss Army Bathroom

The veritable Swiss Army bathroom has 7 rotating modules stacked and skewered to shrink bathroom footprints. Here's how it works: Services are fed from the top of the product through a hole in the ceiling, and waste pipes can be directed through a hole in the floor, or through the wall. It can be installed in a corner (with 100 degree rotation) or you can opt for Centre installation (with continuous rotation for most modules, and 200 degrees for others).

Hidden TP and toilet brush storage are built in. Each unit is constructed of 3mm aluminum with 175 color choices in either a matte or gloss finish.

All this can be yours for about $10,000.

There's a diagram highlighting what each module.

Hot Wheels, Now With POV Video Cameras

Ever wondered what the little make-believe drivers in your Hot Wheels cars see when you race them through a loopty-loop or jump a trashcan filled with burning printer paper? Well now you can thanks to Mattel's Hot Wheels Video Racers, a series of Hot Wheels cars (not Barbies) with integrated point-of-view cameras. Hot damn? No -- hot wheels.

Mattel's Video Racer is the much-needed upgrade that Hot Wheels cars have been dying for. Equipped with a small video camera that can record at 30 to 60 frames per second, the Video Racer will be able to shoot footage of itself roaring down the stunt track. Video can be played back on the small LCD located on the belly of the car or downloaded to a computer via USB. A special Hot Wheels video editor will even let you cut all of the zany clips together.

Pretty cool, right? The cars drop this fall and are expected to go for around $60.

Paper, Not Just For Rolling: Insane Paper Art

This is some sick-ass paper art created by Cheong-ah Hwang. Now I'm not sure if her work qualifies as papercraft or not (since I have no idea what papercraft is), but it does qualify as very f***ing impressive. There's a bunch more after the jump, about half of which are geeky, the other half of which are just amazingly made.

Holy Hot Wheels, Batman!: Evolution Of The Batmobile.

This is a poster depicting the evolution of the Batmobile from its very first incarnations to the latest. It's super-inclusive. Like, 100 different versions of Batmobile inclusive. A lot of which I never knew existed. And most of those I wish didn't. Still, beggars can't be choosers. Beggars can pee directly on the sidewalk though, so they don't have it that bad.

EPL: West Ham Utd vs Arsenal 0-3

Avram Grant's reign as West Ham manager looked set to have ended in defeat as Arsenal romped to a 3-0 win at Upton Park.

The Irons boss was widely expected to lose his job, regardless of the result, with Martin O'Neill ready to step in to try to retain the club's Premier League status.

Arsenal, who moved to within two points of top spot, showed the Israeli's team no mercy as goals from Robin van Persie and Theo Walcott put them in command at half-time, before the Dutchman wrapped things up with a penalty on 77 minutes.

Despite guiding the East London club into the semi-finals of the Carling Cup, where they beat Birmingham in midweek to move within 90 minutes of Wembley, the patience of owners David Gold and David Sullivan - who only appointed Grant during the summer - appears to have run out.

While the club were officially making no comment, Grant's public spat with vice-chairman Karren Brady over the collapse of Steve Sidwell's proposed transfer appeared to have brought matters to a head.

Arsenal, meanwhile, finally produced a complete passing display to bounce back from the disappointment of their midweek cup defeat at Ipswich as they remain very much in the hunt for the title.

All cameras were trained on Grant as, after a quick exchange of words and handshake with Gunners boss Arsene Wenger, he took to the home dugout for what could well be the last time.

There was some sense of irony that Grant's likely departure came at a time when West Ham were actually showing some form, having lost just twice in their previous seven games.

Nevertheless, the Irons remain bottom and they fell behind on 13 minutes when Samir Nasri, back in the starting XI, produced a clever dummy from Walcott's cross - which van Persie despatched into the right corner from 12 yards.

Irons full-back Julien Faubert was then lucky to get away with only yellow card from referee Andre Marriner for jumping in two-footed on Fabregas out on the far touchline, which left Wenger less than impressed.

Walcott shot tamely at goalkeeper Robert Green before West Ham replaced Mark Noble, who had just come back from a spell on the sidelines after a hip problem, with former Gunner Luis Boa Morte.

There was a let-off for Arsenal when Johan Djourou's backpass was too short and Carlton Cole darted in on goal - but stand-in keeper Wojciech Szczesny made a fine block and Hines smashed the rebound over from a tight angle.

Van Persie was within inches of making it 2-0 when Arsenal broke quickly through Nasri and his first-time pass into the left of the penalty area was crashed against the base of the upright by the Dutchman.

West Ham were in danger of being overrun and they doubled their lead five minutes before the break.

Van Persie latched onto Fabregas' ball down the left side of the box, which the Dutchman pulled back from the goalline to the centre, where Walcott crashed it into the roof of the net.

Chants of "You're getting sacked in a hour" rang out from the away end as Grant stood at the edge of his technical area, hands in pockets.

It was more one-way traffic at the start of the second half, van Persie testing Green at his near post and then firing over from 20 yards. However, Szczesny had to be alert to tip away Freddie Sears' angled drive, which looked set for the top corner after a quick break.

Wayne Bridge, making his debut on loan from Manchester City, tripped Walcott as the England winger nipped into the penalty area. Marriner pointed to the spot on 77 minutes and Van Persie slotted the ball into the bottom left corner.

Irons fans had seen enough, hundreds leaving for the exits, with Grant probably soon to follow.

At the final whistle the Israeli shook hands with his players as they left the pitch, before applauding the fans and throwing his lucky claret and blue scarf into the stands in what appeared to be a farewell gesture.

Theo Walcott insisted the team performance was far more important than any personal achievement as he capped his 100th Premier League performance with a goal in the 3-0 victory over West Ham.

"All these stats keep getting better, and it's always nice to get goals," he told ESPN. "But the most important thing was that the team won, we kept a clean sheet so we're very happy."

The performance marked a much-improved display from the 1-1 FA Cup draw against Leeds last Saturday, and Walcott added: "It was clear we've learnt from our mistakes.

"It showed today. It was a bobbly pitch at times but keeping a clean sheet is important. Now we're not thinking about anyone else in the table, just concentrating on ourselves. We're happy just to be where we are and we need to keep on plugging away and keep enjoying our football."

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger was also pleased to see a response to the Leeds display, saying: "It's been a busy week but we started strongly and remained strong. We had plenty of chances, our technical ability came out again today and we were consistent and convincing."

Premier League: West Ham v Arsenal - Preview

By Richard Clarke

Arsène Wenger has had a pretty average week – but he still feels lucky.

Last Saturday, Arsenal needed a last-minute penalty to scrape a draw with Leeds in the FA Cup, four days later they lost 1-0 at Ipswich in the first leg of the Carling Cup Semi-Final.

Both were below-par performances but neither has inflicted irreparable damage – and, mostly importantly, Wenger knows he’ll have the time to turnaround the situation.

The Frenchman has always been a stalwart for stability, something that Avram Grant, his opposite number on Saturday night, is struggling to obtain at Upton Park.

West Ham are rock bottom of the Premier League right now and have barely been higher all season. It has led to very public pressure of Grant’s position – a discomfort Wenger has never really faced at Arsenal.

“I am very lucky and I know my luck,” he admitted on Friday.

“This is a job where you give yourself completely to the next game. You have to behave like you stay your whole life at the club, knowing it can end at any minute.

“But, at the same time, after I identified the clubs where I can work, I did not walk away when I had the possibility. I was always loyal to the club where I was.

“In the case of Grant I don’t think he wants to walk away. But I stayed at the club when I found a condition where I could work in the way I want.”

These two managers could be leading out their teams in the Carling Cup Final late next month. West Ham will take a tight 2-1 advantage to Birmingham for the second leg. Despite a poor performance in the first game, Arsenal are still expected to overturn that 1-0 lead Ipswich secured at Portman Road.

“I said we were naïve and had no spark,” said Wenger. “I don’t think I have anything to change on that statement. The players are conscious of that, it was a night off as you say. We are of course sorry and we want to put things right in the second leg. We had a completely average performance.

“But we will not play like that at West Ham. We want to win there.”

On the eve of the game, Wenger confirmed that Lukasz Fabianski would miss out because of a shoulder injury. Wojciech Szczesny will play his third successive game in goal and James Shea, 19, would be on the bench.

However Wenger still rates the older Pole as his first choice.

“Szczesny has presence, has size and has quality,” he said. “We are in a world of competition but, for me, at the moment it’s clear Fabianski is No 1”.

Denilson (thigh) is also out but Samir Nasri and Robin van Persie are back after missing out with minor kicks in midweek.

West Ham have lost four of their last six games and, in their previous Premier League match, suffered their worst defeat in four years when they went down 5-0 at Newcastle.

But then that Ipswich defeat was only Arsenal’s second loss to lower League opposition in the Wenger era. The Suffolk side was aptly agricultural in their approach at times but the manager accepts the tactic troubled his team.

“I have seen many games where [long balls] are the Achilles heel of any team,” said Wenger. “We have to deal with that now and we wanted to deal with that at Ipswich.

“It was the only problem we faced and they did that in a consistent way – we had 60-70 per cent of the ball and when you have that you want to create more than we did.

“They gave us this problem, it is normal and we have to deal with that but, on the night, I personally believe that with the ball we did not create enough.

“We respect the way that Ipswich played but now we want to play well at West Ham on Saturday. We are on a good run in the Premier League and we want to continue that. We have produced fantastic games, quality-wise, during the Christmas period. I think we switched off a bit mentally during the Cup games, I am confident we will switch on against West Ham.”

This is turning in a sticky spell for Arsenal. Since beating Chelsea so comprehensively on December 27, they have played five times and won just once.

Perhaps a mental fatigue is the main factor. The manager has claimed his injury list is about as clear as it has ever been at this stage of a season and that has the extra benefit of allowing rotation. Legs are relatively fresh.

Arsenal have lost nothing in 2011 but, at the same, a little dip has complicated an already difficult burden.

In the next few days they go to West Ham and Leeds. Only one is a cup game but both will feel like it.

And this time, unlike their two games last week, Arsenal have no real margin for error.
