EPL: Aston Villa 0-0 Arsenal

Arsenal were twice denied by the woodwork but their long unbeaten streak continues after they drew 0-0 with Aston Villa at Villa Park.

Cesc Fabregas struck the post in first-half stoppage time and then Tomas Rosicky crashed a shot against the underside of the bar after the break.

Villa played their full part in a pulsating end-to-end affair but failed to add the Gunners to the scalps of the other 'big four' teams they have beaten this season - Manchester United, Liverpool and Chelsea.

It means Arsenal have now gone 12 years since last tasting defeat away to Villa as they extended their unbeaten Premier League run to 10 matches from which they have collected 24 points.

Villa also went close to snatching a winner, with Stewart Downing spurning two opportunities, but O'Neill will be slightly concerned they have now failed to score in four successive league games.

Fabregas had been Villa's two-goal destroyer in the Christmas clash at the Emirates Stadium and he turned in another classy performance while Andrey Arshavin was always a threat to the Villa rearguard.

Villa skipper Stiliyan Petrov defied an Achilles problem to produce a sterling display in the middle of the park.

Arsenal goalkeeper Manuel Almunia was called into action to prevent Gabriel Agbonlahor from giving Villa a fourth-minute lead.

Emile Heskey played in Villa's 10-goal leading scorer and his low cross-shot contained plenty of power and was tipped around the post by Almunia.

Heskey was again prominent in finding the overlapping Petrov in space down the left and his deft centre was only just too high for Agbonlahor.

Arsenal responded and Villa defender Richard Dunne deflected a shot from Eduardo for a corner.

Villa goalkeeper Brad Friedel then went down to his right to parry away a dipping drive from the edge of the box by Denilson.

Heskey was posing plenty of problems and Arsenal defender Thomas Vermaelen was yellow-carded after bringing down the England striker 25 yards out.

It was a situation tailor-made for the dead-ball skills of Ashley Young and he curled his free-kick only a couple of feet wide with Almunia rooted to his line.

Downing squandered a good chance to break the deadlock in the 32nd minute after Ashley Young had shaken off the challenge of Gael Clichy.

His cross to the back post dropped invitingly for the former Middlesbrough player but he could not keep his shot down.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger was forced to make a substitution after 35 minutes with Vermaelen limping out of the action and replaced by Sol Campbell.

In first-half stoppage time Fabregas came close to breaking the deadlock when his shot flew across the body of Friedel but struck the far post and rebounded to safety.

Arsenal began the second half on the offensive and Friedel did well to block a shot from Fabregas.

But Downing should have done better for Villa when he headed wide from two yards out from a deep centre by Ashley Young before Heskey was cautioned for bringing down Fabregas.

Arsenal suffered a setback just after the hour mark when Eduardo limped off with what appeared to be a hamstring injury and was replaced by Nicklas Bendtner.

The Gunners were now looking the more likely to open the scoring and twice in the space of a few seconds nearly went ahead.

Arshavin showed his class with a run into the Villa box which forced a good block out of Friedel.

The rebound came out to Rosicky and his shot cannoned against the underside of the bar but did not cross the line.

Heskey was replaced after 77 minutes by promising youngster Fabian Delph and then Rosicky made way for Samir Nasri.

Clichy was yellow-carded with six minutes remaining for a challenge on Downing but there was no more significant goalmouth action as the game ended goalless.

FA Cup: Stoke City 3-1 Arsenal

Two headers from Ricardo Fuller helped Stoke dump Arsenal out of the FA Cup, with the Gunners crashing to a 3-1 fourth-round defeat.

Arsene Wenger handed Sol Campbell his first start since rejoining the north Londoners but the veteran defender could not stop the visitors falling behind at the Britannia after only 70 seconds courtesy of Ricardo Fuller's header.

Denilson hauled the hosts level shortly before the break but a second header from Fuller and Dean Whitehead's late strike saw Stoke reach the fifth round.

The Gunners' were beaten by two goals from Rory Delap's long throws on their last visit to the Britannia Stadium, and Wenger's men clearly failed to learn their lesson from last season as with only a minute on the clock, the Premier League title challengers found themselves 1-0 down.

Delap unleashed his trademark delivery from midway inside the Gunners half and with Lukasz Fabianski slow to come off his line, Fuller stooped to head past the Polish keeper and into roof of the net.

The Gunners' start was sluggish, and Fuller was denied what looked like a clear penalty, when Mikael Silvestre's slide tackle in the box caught the striker, despite the best efforts of the Jamaican to stay on his feet.

Wenger's side gradually eased themselves into the affair and found themselves level on 42 minutes.

Glenn Whelan was penalised for handball on the corner of the penalty area and Fabregas rolled the ball into the path of Denilson, whose shot from the edge of the box found the net via a double deflection on the way through a crowded box.

Wenger introduced Andriy Arshavin, Eduardo and Aaron Ramsey in a triple substitution midway through the second period in a bid to avoid a replay, but it was the Potters who took the lead 12 minutes from time.

As Tony Pulis prepared a triple substitution of his own, Mama Sidibe escaped down the right-hand side and delivered an inch-perfect cross which enabled Fuller to escape the attentions of Campbell and nod home.

With Arsenal now desperate to take the tie to a second game, Stoke took advantage of gaps at the back to extend their lead and put the game beyond the visitors.

Matthew Etherington found the space on the left-side of the box to whip in a low cross that found Whitehead, who sidefooted home his first goal for the club and sealed the Potters' place in the last 16 after inflicting upon Arsenal their first defeat in ten games.

EPL: Arsenal 4-2 Bolton Wanderers

Arsenal stormed to the summit of the Premier League as they came from 2-0 down to beat Bolton 4-2 at the Emirates Stadium.

Owen Coyle's men - beaten 2-0 by the Gunners on Sunday - took a shock lead after seven minutes through Gary Cahill and Matthew Taylor then doubled the advantage from the penalty spot.

However, Arsene Wenger's young side showed the character of champions to rally before half-time through Tomas Rosicky's strike.

Captain Cesc Fabregas netted a controversial equaliser on 52 minutes, and then Thomas Vermaelen completed the comeback.

Andrey Arshavin netted a fourth to take the Gunners above Chelsea on goal difference, albeit having now played a match more - but nevertheless a scenario which looked so unlikely following a resounding 3-0 home defeat by the Blues at the end of November, which left Arsenal some 11 points adrift.

The Gunners had since won six of the last eight league games to haul themselves back into the title race, and it was a bright start by the home side.

After five minutes, Eduardo laid the ball back to Abou Diaby, but his low shot from the edge of the area was straight at Jussi Jaaskelainen.

Arsenal had offered to pay the costs of those travelling Bolton supporters following the postponement of this fixture earlier this month.

Only around 300 hardened Trotters had made the long journey south tonight, perhaps more in hope than expectation.

But Coyle's side clearly had not read the script as they snatched a shock lead.

Gael Clichy's attempted high clearance from a free-kick failed to make it out of the penalty area. Kevin Davies nodded it back into the six-yard box, where Cahill calmly dispatched his shot past Manuel Almunia.

The Emirates Stadium was left in a stunned silence, apart from the small, but jubilant section in the far corner.

Arsenal, though, slowly built some pressure.

Fabregas forced Jaaskelainen to make a smart save after cutting into the left side of the area.
Eduardo then stopped Diaby's long, cross-field pass with his first touch, before firing a 20-yard drive just over and Arshavin was also just off target.

At the other end, Taylor fired in a free-kick and Almunia had to make a reaction save, low to his right.

It got worse for the home side on 27 minutes when Denilson upended Lee Chung-yong, leaving referee Alan Wiley with little option but to point to the penalty spot.

Taylor squeezed the ball inside the right-hand post via a touch from Almunia to leave Wenger's young side facing yet another test of their character.

Despite barracking from the frustrated home fans, Arsenal remained patient.

Bolton, though, continued to break up Arsenal's passing with a string of fouls.

From a deep free-kick into the box, Kevin Davies flicked the ball backwards up onto the underside of the crossbar, and Jaaskelainen gathered.

Arsenal pulled one back two minutes before the break.

Fabregas won the ball in midfield, and slipped Rosicky away down the right channel.

The Czech Republic midfielder set himself, before driving an angled shot past a static Jaaskelainen, the keeper beaten inside his near post.

Arsenal continued to press at the start of the second half, and equalised in controversial fashion on 52 minutes.

William Gallas appeared to catch Mark Davies on the ankle as the pair went for a 50/50 ball, but play was allowed to continue despite the Bolton protests as their man lay on the ground.

Arshavin battled to the edge of the area, where possession broke to Fabregas and he charged into the box before slipping a low angled drive through the keeper's legs.

There was a delay as Davies finally received treatment, and eventually had to be taken off on a stretcher, replaced by Gavin McCann.

Arsenal continued to press, with Fabregas' 20-yard drive tipped over.

The comeback was complete on 65 minutes as centre-back Vermaelen fired home after Diaby had knocked down a corner.

Davies flashed a shot across the Arsenal goal as Bolton threatened to spoil things again.

Arsenal, though, got the crucial fourth goal after 85 minutes, when Eduardo played in Arshavin, who made no mistake and could even afford to miss a one-on-one during stoppage time.

EPL: Bolton Wanderers 0-2 Arsenal

Arsenal are only three points behind Premier League leaders Chelsea after recording a 2-0 win away to Owen Coyle's Bolton on Sunday.

Gunners captain Cesc Fabregas produced an impressive display on his return from injury to spoil new Trotters manager Owen Coyle's 'homecoming' at the Reebok Stadium.

The Spain midfielder, who missed three matches with a hamstring injury, scored his 10th league goal of the season in the 28th minute after a neat one-two with Eduardo.

His surging run then led to substitute Fran Merida scoring the second 12 minutes from time as former Wanderers player Coyle's reign got off to a losing start.

Arsenal's victory, which saw then soak up plenty of pressure from a struggling Bolton side trying to play their way out of trouble, lifted them to within three points of league leaders Chelsea.

With these two teams due to meet in the return fixture at the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday, Arsene Wenger's side could well take over at the top in the next few days.

The Gunners, unbeaten in the league since the end of November, owed everything to their inspirational captain, who, even though his influence faded in the second half, was instrumental in the win.

How Coyle, who swapped one relegation battle with Burnley for another with Bolton, must wish he had a player with half the drive and invention.

The paucity of resources available to the Bolton boss was evident by the fact he named exactly the same starting XI and bench as predecessor Gary Megson had done in his final game - the 2-2 league draw with Hull on December 29.

Initially he will have been pleased by what he saw as the new manager factor had an immediate effect with Kevin Davies having a close-range shot blocked and Ivan Klasnic drilling a 20-yard effort past Manuel Almunia only to be flagged offside in the opening two minutes.

The transition from Megson's long-ball tactics to Coyle's football is something that will obviously take a while to get used to but there were fleeting glimpses of the 'new' Bolton.

Davies, Gretar Steinsson and Klasnic combined down the right in a short passing move to set up Tamir Cohen 20 yards out but he fired well over.

Arsenal, with Fabregas at the heart of everything, had struggled to create a clear opportunity until they took the lead in the 28th minute.

Steinsson slipped on the edge of the penalty area to hand possession to Fabregas and the Spain international capitalised, quickly exchanging passes with Eduardo before slotting a low shot past Jussi Jaaskelainen's outstretched right hand.

Arsenal's 19-year-old midfielder Craig Eastmond, making his first league start, almost doubled the lead four minutes later with a first-time shot from Fabregas' corner, which Jaaskelainen saved on the line with his legs.

And the excellent Gunners captain should have had a penalty in the 33rd minute when he was caught by Zat Knight but referee Phil Dowd waved away claims.

Two minutes before the interval Fabregas missed his easiest chance from only seven yards from Andrey Arshavin's cut-back before Klasnic mis-kicked from even closer range in added time at the end of the first half.

Bolton began the second half as they had the first, with both Matt Taylor and Cohen causing Almunia concern in the early stages.

Lee Chung-Yong, Wanderers' best player, had caused Armand Traore problems all game and, having out-stripped the left-back once again, his low cross was deflected goalwards by William Gallas but Almunia collected.

Taylor was guilty of not testing the Arsenal goalkeeper in the 61st minute when Klasnic spun on the edge of the area to release him on the left only for his team-mate to blaze over.

Taylor was again the culprit in the 70th minute when he sprang the offside trap from substitute Gavin McCann's lofted pass but tried to beat Almunia from 35 yards despite being well clear of the nearest defender and ended up shooting wide.

Arsenal's response was for Thomas Vermaelen to curl a 25-yard free-kick on to the top of Jaaskelainen's net.

Fabregas had been quieter after the break but, when he did take control again, it set up the second goal 12 minutes from time.

His surging run into the penalty area allowed Eduardo to cross to the far post where Merida side-footed home to clinch victory.

(Nike)RED Laces Launched

On the day before World Aids day some of the world’s best footballers joined Bono at announcement of partnership between NIKE and (RED).

Didier Drogba (Chelsea), Joe Cole (Chelsea), Andrei Arshavin (Arsenal), Marco Materazzi (Inter Milan), Denilson (Arsenal), Lucas Neill (Everton), Clint Dempsey (Fulham) and Seol Ki-Hyeon (Fulham), came together in London to announce a partnership between NIKE and (RED).

This unique partnership delivers a two-pronged approach to fight HIV/AIDS in Africa by delivering funds to support programs that offer education and medication on the ground and will harness the power of sport to engage youth around the world in the fight against AIDS in Africa.

In making the partnership announcement, Mark Parker, President and CEO of NIKE, Inc., Susan Smith Ellis, CEO, (RED) and Professor Michel D. Kazatchkine Executive Director of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS , Tuberculosis and Malaria were joined by footballers from around the world and U2 vocalist and (RED) co-founder Bono, to emphasize the need for global action and participation to eliminate AIDS in Africa.

“The fight against AIDS in Africa needs great brands to drive awareness and engagement,” said Susan Smith Ellis, CEO, (RED). “Nike is the right partner to connect education with sport, and in so doing help drive social change, prevention and understanding of HIV/AIDS. We are thrilled to have them with us.”

Nike has a proven history of elevating global causes to create consumer awareness and participation. “As a global brand and creative company, Nike can play a role in amplifying this important issue,” said Mark Parker, President and CEO of NIKE, Inc. “With football as the catalyst, Nike is joining the (RED) movement to fight HIV/AIDS in Africa.”

The Nike and (RED) concept is a simple one that invites people to “Lace Up. Save Lives” by purchasing a pair of NIKE (PRODUCT)RED™ laces. One hundred percent of the profits from (NIKE)RED laces will be split equally between The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, which funds AIDS programs that provide medicine for those living with HIV, and football-based community initiatives that deliver education and understanding around HIV/AIDS prevention. This unique partnership delivers programs that both medicate and educate.

Progress has been made in the drive to reduce HIV infections in Africa, with fourteen countries reporting a decline in the prevalence of the disease. This is great news and proves the fight can be won. But AIDS remains one of the greatest challenges facing the world today. An estimated 3,800 men, women and children die in sub-Saharan Africa every day, in addition to 6,000 new infections every day among 15-24 year old men and women.

“The (RED) Nike laces can tie athletes around the world together with people living under threat from HIV in Africa in a beautiful way ,” said Professor Michel D. Kazatchkine, Executive Director of the Global Fund. “Wearing these (RED) laces is a sign that you care about others – and it helps us to protect and treat millions of people who every day risk infection or struggle with the effects of HIV.”

“(RED) has created a sustainable way to engage business in funding the fight against AIDS in Africa on a grand scale. Its partnerships not only deliver funds to buy medicine to keep people alive but also provides the leverage needed for us to demonstrate to the public sector that this partnership works and to garner additional support,” said Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Minister of Health of Ethiopia and Chairman of the Board of Directors, The Global Fund. “The addition of Nike to the (RED) initiative will only strengthen this impact as it will help us take this message to millions of football fans around the world and engage them in this issue through their passion for sport.”

(Nike)RED laces will be available December 1st at Nike Store locations and key retailers worldwide. In addition, (Nike)RED laces will be available at nike.com for purchase. And additional (NIKE) RED products will be introduced in the coming months.

EPL: Arsenal 2-2 Everton

Tomas Rosicky came off the bench to grab a stoppage-time equaliser as Arsenal earned a 2-2 Premier League draw with Everton at The Emirates.

Leon Osman headed the visitors into a deserved lead on 12 minutes, jumping highest in the 18-yard box and powering home a corner from new loan signing Landon Donovan.

However, the midfielder then unluckily deflected Denilson's 20-yard shot past Tim Howard as the Gunners levelled on 28 minutes.

Steven Pienaar's breakaway goal looked to have won it on 81, when the South African midfielder beat the offside trap to latch onto Tim Cahill's throughball and brilliantly dink the ball over Manuel Almunia.

But super-sub Rosicky saw his dramatic late shot deflect off Lucas Neill and loop over Tim Howard to earn Arsenal a draw which cut the deficit on leaders Chelsea down to three points.

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger had called on his team to maintain the momentum which has dragged them right back into the title rave with five wins from six, but it was Everton who made the better start.

Louis Saha had got ahead of the defence on the right, but blasted over.

It was no surprise when the visitors took the lead on 12 minutes as Osman headed in a corner from Donovan, the United States international making his debut after a loan move from Los Angeles Galaxy.

Wenger's youngsters faced another test of character and looked for an immediate response. However, Everton dropped men back to crowd midfield.

Arsenal were, though, level on 28 minutes. Denilson charged down a clearance, and the ball fell to Andrey Arshavin on the edge of the penalty area.

The Russian fed Eduardo, who touched a pass back to the Brazilian, and his low strike took a wicked deflection off Osman to wrong-foot Howard.

Despite getting themselves back into the match, Arsenal looked anything but comfortable when defending around their own penalty area.

Almunia failed to collect a deep cross, which Tim Cahill almost headed in.

Everton captain Phil Neville then chipped his angled effort onto the roof of the net.

The conditions worsened as the second half started.

Donovan weaved his way into the Arsenal penalty area, and was unfortunate to see a curling shot drift wide.

As the hour mark approached, the weather - which caused the postponement of the midweek match here against Bolton - showed no signs of improvement.

Arshavin cut into the right side of the Everton box and drew Howard, but the Everton keeper did well to recover to claw the ball away.

Saha latched onto a stray pass and charged goalwards, before his 20-yard shot was deflected behind.

Bacary Sagna's deep cross from the right was just too far ahead of both Rosicky - on for Aaron Ramsey - and Arshavin, arriving at the far post.

Armand Traore flashed a left-wing cross through the six-yard box, before Denilson struck a 20-yard effort over.

Both teams made further changes with 15 minutes left as Eduardo was replaced by Carlos Vela and Everton sent James Vaughan on for Saha.

Abou Diaby hacked clear after Cahill broke into the left side of the Arsenal box before Arshavin did the same at the other end, with his shot blocked at the near post.

Everton, though, snatched what looked to be a late winner when Pienaar raced onto a pass from Cahill to chip Almunia with eight minutes left.

Vaughan could have made the game safe when clean through, but this time Almunia saved.

Denilson, just returned from a back problem, had to be taken off on a stretcher after collapsing in the build-up to the Everton attack. Fran Merida came on.

Arsenal threw plenty forward during the closing stages, and were rewarded in stoppage time when Rosicky smashed home a close-range shot which deflected off Neill.
