Toon Gunn-ed down on Tyneside.

Goals from Nicklas Bendtner, Abou Diaby and Samir Nasri earned Arsenal a 3-1 victory over struggling Newcastle at St James' Park on Saturday.

The Gunners establish a 3-1 lead, and there was little he or anyone else in a black and white shirt could do about it.

It might have been different had Obafemi Martins converted a 23rd-minute penalty - which Owen would have taken had he started - but Manuel Almunia kept out his spot-kick to provide the platform for a clinical second-half display.

Bendtner opened the scoring with a 57th-minute header, but Martins levelled within seconds to give his side hope.

However, goals from Diaby and Nasri within a devastating three-minute period wrapped up a win which saw the Gunners close the gap to Manchester United, Chelsea and Liverpool, and at the same time, keep Newcastle entrenched in the relegation mire.

Gallas grabs late winner for Gunners

William Gallas scored a controversial late winner as Arsenal came from behind to beat Hull 2-1 and set up an FA Cup semi-final against Chelsea.
Arsenal: Celebrate late winner

The Tigers won 2-1 at the Emirates Stadium in the Premier League and they looked set to repeat the trick on Tuesday night after taking the lead through Nicky Barmby's deflected strike.

However Robin van Persie drew Arsenal level in the 74th minute and Gallas headed in a suspiciously offside winner with six minutes remaining to set up an all-London last-four clash at Wembley on April 18.

When the Gunners last played a major final under the Twin Towers, winning the FA Cup in 1998 and then the following season's Charity Shield, Arsenal were a much different proposition - led by midfielder enforcer and captain Patrick Vieira, soon to be inspired by the genius of Thierry Henry.

Now, though, is the turn of Arsene Wenger's new generation to repay their manager's unwavering faith that they have the talent to deliver silverware once again.

Hull, though, had clearly not read the script on Tuesday night as they snatched the lead on 13 minutes when an angled shot from Barmby - who later had a goal ruled out for a marginal offside decision - saw his shot deflected up off Johan Djourou and over Lukasz Fabianski.

The young Polish goalkeeper - given a chance to impress in the cups ahead of regular number one Manuel Almunia - was at full stretch to tip over a free-kick from Geovanni, who smashed a superb strike here during the Tigers' league win here in September.

Arshavin's angled drive was diverted past the near post by Anthony Gardner but Hull remained dangerous with a header from Kamil Zayatte dropping on the roof of the net.

As half-time loomed, only a sliding block from Samuel Ricketts prevented Arshavin drilling in Walcott's low cross, then the Russian flashed a right-foot volley across the face of goal.

In the second half Abou Diaby's header from a corner bounced just inches the wrong side of the post, Arshavin had another close-range effort blocked, then Djourou's header was cleared off the line - with Alex Song hooking the loose ball wide.

Referee Mike Riley's patience finally wore out with Hull's time-wasting, and he cautioned goalkeeper Boaz Myhill for moving the ball at a free-kick.

Van Persie then forced the Hull keeper into a full stretch save from his bending, 25-yard free-kick before seeing a looping header hit the top of the bar with Myhill beaten.

The equaliser came through van Persie with 16 minutes left. Substitute Nicklas Bendtner's persistence in the penalty area paid off when he stabbed the ball across to Arshavin, who pulled it back to the penalty spot for the Dutchman to score.

Bendtner had a close-range shot blocked behind by Ricketts but Arsenal won it with six minutes to go when Gallas - stripped of the captaincy by Wenger earlier in the campaign after publicly questioning the young team's battling qualities - nodded in, from an offside position.

Arshavin 'desperate' to face Hull in FA Cup

Andrey Arshavin is ‘desperate’ to be fit for the FA Cup Quarter-Final with Hull City at Emirates Stadium on Tuesday.

The Russian international suffered a nasty gash to his right foot during the first half of the game against Blackburn on Saturday. He had eight stitches at half time but went on to score a wonder goal with the same foot just past the hour.

The 27-year-old has been receiving treatment ever since and, according to Arsène Wenger, he is determined to make it. Elsewhere, Lukasz Fabianski comes in for Manuel Almunia. This was planned but the Spaniard is out for the game anyway because of an ankle injury and is doubtful for the weekend trip to Newcastle. Kieran Gibbs will replace Gael Clichy, who is rested. Eduardo (groin) is still out and Aaron Ramsey will not be involved.

“Arshavin had eight stitches in his foot but he is still in the squad,” Wenger told Arsenal TV Online on Monday afternoon. “We will make a decision tomorrow.

“He is desperate to be involved. He just wants to play. He couldn’t practice today but we’ll assess him tomorrow morning.

“Almunia is out – he would not have played anyway but he is a doubt for Saturday. “Also Kieran Gibbs will play tomorrow night, Clichy is completely rested. Aaron Ramsey is not in the squad too. At the moment he is growing in stature and a bit tired so we will rest him. Apart from that everybody is in.”

Spot-on Gunners squeeze past Roma

Arsenal edged into the Champions League quarter-finals after beating Roma 7-6 on penalties after a 1-0 loss saw the tie end 1-1 on aggregate.

The Gunners fell behind after 10 minutes in the Stadio Olimpico when Brazilian defender Juan had all the time in the world to lash home from close range.

But neither side were able to make the telling breakthrough before regulation time finished and when extra time failed to separate them too, it went to the inevitable penalty shoot-out.
Arsenal took the first kick, but Doni comfortably saved Eduardo's weak effort. Mirko Vucinic missed Roma's second kick after both David Pizarro and Robin van Persie had successfully converted theirs.

Both sides then converted their next five kicks before Max Tonetto lost his nerve and blazed over to spark wild jubilations from the Gunners.

Arsenal's success means there are now four English sides in the last eight of the Champions League for the second successive year, while there are no Italian sides in the quarter-finals for the first time since 2002.

Roma probably had the better of the match in normal time and will feel aggrieved to have crashed out, especially when Francesco Totti's cross from the left managed to squirm through to Juan and the Brazilian defender had time to slot home past Manuel Almunia from six yards out after just 10 minutes.

But the Gunners were grateful to the Spaniard when he made an excellent double save to deny drives from first Marco Motta and then Rodrigo Taddei.
Arsenal's best chance of the half, and indeed the entire match fell to Abou Diaby, but his headed effort from 12 yards was straight at Doni.

Roma were incensed just before the half-time interval when Gael Clichy's clumsy challenge brought Taddei down in the box, but much to Arsenal's relief the referee waved away the Italians' penalty claims.

The second period was a scrappy affair but Julio Baptista spurned a glorious chance to send Roma through when he failed to make contact with the ball from just eight yards out.
Arsenal finished regulation time the stronger with Kolo Toure wasting a good headed opportunity.

Extra time was a bit of a non-event, with neither side seemingly brave enough to commit men forward in search of a winner as the game petered out into the dreaded penalty shoot-out.
And it was Arsenal who were left celebrating a quarter-final spot with the draw for the last eight scheduled to take place on Friday week.

Arsenal Football Club (also known as Arsenal, The Arsenal or The Gunners) are an English professional football club based in Holloway, North London. They play in the Premier League and are one of the most successful clubs in English football, having won thirteen First Division and Premier League titles and ten FA Cups, and hold the record for the longest uninterrupted period in the English top flight.

Arsenal were founded in 1886 and were the first
Southern club to join the Football League, in 1893. They won their first major trophies in the 1930s, with five League Championship titles and two FA Cups. After a lean period in the post-war years they became the second club of the 20th century to win the League and FA Cup Double in 1970–71, and during the past twenty years have recorded a series of successes – in this time Arsenal have won a Cup Double, two further League and FA Cup Doubles, the Premier League title unbeaten, and became the first London club to reach the UEFA Champions League Final.

The club's colours have traditionally been red and white, which have evolved through history. Similarly, the club have changed location over time; the team were initially founded in
Woolwich, south-east London, and in 1913 they moved north across the city to Arsenal Stadium, Highbury. In 2006 they made a less drastic move to their current home, the Emirates Stadium in nearby Holloway.

Arsenal have a large fanbase, who hold a string of long-standing rivalries with several other clubs; the most notable of these is with neighbours
Tottenham Hotspur, with whom they regularly contest the North London derby. Arsenal are one of the richest clubs in English football (valued at over £600m as of 2008), and thanks to their stature, have regularly featured in portrayals of football in British culture. Arsenal Ladies are the most successful English club in women's football and are also affiliated with the club.
