EPL: Wigan Athletics vs Arsenal 2-2

By Richard Clarke

Arsenal dropped two crucial points on Wednesday night by drawing 2-2 at 10-man Wigan.

Arsène Wenger’s side went behind from a hotly debatable 17th-minute penalty but still lead at the break thanks to late brace. Andrey Arshavin scored the first and made the second for Nicklas Bendtner.

The visitors seemed to have control in the second half. And their cause was helped when Wigan’s best player on the night, Charles N’Zogbia, was sent off for apparently headbutting Jack Wilshere.

The game was digesting the dismissal when, 10 minutes from time, Sebastien Squillaci headed into his own net as he attempted to stop Gary Caldwell scoring.

After beating Chelsea so wonderfully on Monday this was a big blow to Arsenal’s title hopes.

But they reach the midway point of the season with 36 points from 19 games – two points off leaders Manchester United.

This was a disappointing night but Arsenal are still very much in the title race.

Wenger retained only three players from Monday’s starting line-up. They were Lukasz Fabianski, Bacary Sagna and Laurent Koscielny.

The Frenchman clearly had the next two games – Birmingham away and Manchester City at home – in mind. He was managing his resources.

The following players came in: Abou Diaby, Tomas Rosicky, Denilson, Squillaci, Arshavin, Emmanuel Eboue, Marouane Chamakh and Bendtner.

Robin van Persie and Alex Song were left out entirely. Cesc Fabregas was suspended. The rest of Monday’s side was on the bench.

It was a bit of a gamble given Arsenal had gained so much momentum from the win over Chelsea. But this is arguably the most intense time of the season so Wenger rolled the dice.

For a time, it appeared he had lost.

The first 10 minutes were fast, frenetic and dominated by Wigan. N’Zogbia skipped past Eboue on the left hand side to reach the byline. However, his cross was misdirected. Then Hugo Rodallega drifted off Koscielny at the far post but failed to connect with his header.

The Frenchman got some sort of revenge when he stopped the striker in his tracks after Squillaci had been beaten.

Arshavin prodded an effort over the bar but N’Zogbia tested Fabianski from distance. The visitors were under pressure.

However, as time wore on, Arsenal gained control. Bendtner’s goalbound free-kick hit Squillaci in the wall and Eboue’s cross found Arshavin at the far post but the Russian’s volley was blocked.

So, the opener, when it arrived in the 17th minute was slightly against the run of play – and very controversial.

N’Zogbia danced inside Diaby in the right-hand channel and though Koscielny flicked out a foot he was withdrawing it by the time the midfielder went past him. Replays cast doubt there was contact but referee Lee Probert pointed to the spot.

Ben Watson converted the penalty with aplomb.

In fact, Wigan would have stronger claims for a spot-kick shortly afterwards when Fabianski took out Rodallega. Arsenal were saved because Koscielny, the covering defender, had prodded the ball well clear.

Midway through the half, Ali Al Habsi spilled Rosicky’s piledriver and only a perfectly-timed challenge from Caldwell stopped Koscielny stabbing home from close range.

Shortly after that Diaby limped off and Wilshere replaced him. Though the change was not planned it added an urgency and energy to Arsenal’s game.

By half time, they were in the lead.

Seven minutes from the whistle, Chamakh flicked Bendtner into space on the right. The Dane’s drive was shoveled out to Arshavin by Al Habsi. It was a difficult height for the diminutive Russian but he waited for the ball to fall and hooked his shot into the corner.

Arshavin had been quiet until that moment but suddenly he was at the hub of the Arsenal attack. Two minutes before the whistle he fashioned their second by driving at the Wigan defence and prodding a ball through to Bendtner.

The striker bundled home his fourth goal of the season.

The brace gave Arsenal a cushion they would enjoy at the start of the second half. The visitors were happy to keep the ball and invite Wigan on. For the first time in the game, the hosts had to bring the game to Arsenal.

It meant that the chances dried up. Wilshere burst into the area and Sagna’s right-wing cross was headed into his own sidenetting by Antolin Alcaraz.

Just before the hour, Cleverley latched on to the full back’s clearance and fired over. But Wigan seemed to be running out of ideas.

And, in the 70th minute, Arsenal might have killed the game. Arshavin timed his run perfectly to collect Wilshere’s clip into the area. However, the Russian could not lift his shot over Al Habsi.

But as the visitors started to look further forward, so Wigan had space to create – and they nearly profited.

In the 75th minute, substitute James McArthur sent N’Zogbia clear and his drive was batted away by Fabianski from point-blank range.

It would be the last meaningful act of the midfielder’s game. Two minutes later he appeared to headbutt Wilshere and was sent off.

Sometimes late dismissals kill off the chasing team, this one did not.

In the 80th minute, Watson’s deep corner was headed back into the area by Rodallega and Squillaci, in trying the prevent Caldwell from scoring, nodded the ball into his own net.

Wenger threw on Theo Walcott and Samir Nasri immediately.

Four minutes from time, the Frenchman’s free-kick hit a flailing Wigan arm in the wall but referee Probert waved play on.

Arsenal pressed and pressed in the dying minutes but the winner would not come.

This was certainly two points dropped but it has not done terminal damage to Wenger's title aspirations.

EPL: Arsenal vs Chelsea 3-1

Arsenal moved back to second place in the Premier League after finally beating title rivals Chelsea for the first time since November 2008 as the Blues' poor run continued.

The Gunners had lost each of their previous five matches against Chelsea, but Alex Song put them ahead before half-time, with quickfire strikes from captain Cesc Fabregas and Theo Walcott giving Arsene Wenger's side a three-goal cushion.

Chelsea reduced the deficit through Branislav Ivanovic, but there was no way back for Carlo Ancelotti's men, who have now taken just six points from their last eight league games - the club's worst run since 1998.

Arsenal, beaten at Manchester United in their previous game, were positive during the opening exchanges.

Robin van Persie almost collected Song's chip into the box, but the ball bounced just ahead of the Dutch striker.

There was a warning with Chelsea's first meaningful attack as Didier Drogba - with 13 goals in as many games against the Gunners - shrugged off his marker to drag a 20-yard shot wide.

John Terry pulled back Van Persie as the Gunners looked to break on the half-way line, but a stern talking-to from referee Mark Clattenburg was all the Chelsea skipper received.

The home side continued to press, and had a penalty appeal waved away when Florent Malouda looked to have made some contact with Van Persie at the edge of the box.

Nasri's 25-yard free-kick was on target, but held by Petr Cech.

Walcott latched on to a long ball over the Chelsea defence, but just as he aimed to cut back into the area, his touch was poor and Terry recovered to clear.

On 29 minutes, former Gunner Ashley Cole went into the referee's book for tripping Walcott as his England colleague turned him on the right touchline.

Van Persie was then put through into the left by Nasri after some clever one-touch passing, the Dutchman snatched at his angled shot, which flew high and wide.

Salomon Kalou was perhaps fortunate to receive only a yellow card after jumping in, studs up on Gael Clichy.

Arsenal increased the tempo as half-time approached.

Walcott scampered into the right side of the Chelsea penalty area and was blocked by Cech at the near post before the goalkeeper turned over Nasri's chip which was looping into the top-left corner.

The Gunners finally made the breakthrough after 43 minutes.

Jack Wilshere and Song exchanged passes on the edge of the area, with the Cameroon midfielder carrying the ball into the box.

Paulo Ferreira slid in and tripped Fabregas, but Song had the presence of mind not to wait for a whistle and swept a low left-footed shot across goal and into the bottom right corner.

Chelsea made a change at the start of the second half as the creative Brazilian Ramires replaced John Obi Mikel.

Arsenal, though, had a two-goal cushion after 51 minutes.

Van Persie held the ball up 30 yards out, and, as he was closed down, Michael Essien's challenge inadvertently pushed the ball straight to Walcott clean through on goal.

The England winger dashed to the edge of the box, where he drew Cech before sliding the ball along to Fabregas and the Arsenal skipper made no mistake from 15 yards.

Chelsea had little chance to recover, as Walcott smashed in goal number three just 90 seconds later.

Walcott robbed Malouda and fed Fabregas, who repaid the favour by sending the Arsenal winger away down the right for him to slot a low shot into the bottom left corner.

Ancelotti had to do something, and sent on Gael Kakuta, replacing Malouda.

Chelsea snatched a lifeline after 57 minutes when Drogba's free-kick floated through to the six-yard box, where it was nodded in by Ivanovic.

Given Arsenal's recent record of failing to hold on to winning positions, the visitors rallied.

Chelsea made a final change when Ferreira was replaced by Jose Bosingwa.

Arsenal just about weathered the storm as the contest entered the final 20 minutes.

Nasri should then have done better when Kakuta's tame back-pass presented him with the ball 10 yards from goal, but Cech was out quickly to block.

With 18 minutes left, Walcott was replaced by defensive midfielder Abou Diaby who made his first appearance since mid-October, before Marouane Chamakh came on for Van Persie.

Diaby's close-range effort was blocked by Frank Lampard and Kakuta's bundled effort was ruled out for offside as the Gunners closed out for a long-overdue victory against their championship rivals and moved within two points of leaders Manchester United, albeit having played a game more.

Premier League: Arsenal v Chelsea - Preview

By Richard Clarke

"Life is there for change,” mused Arsène Wenger at the end of his press conference. “Life is there for movement."

How Arsenal need a bit of movement in their recent results against Chelsea.

Look away now if you are of a nervous disposition. Here come the stats.

Chelsea have won their last five games against Arsenal. In fact Manchester United and Chelsea have triumphed in 14 of their last 18 against Wenger’s men. Didier Drogba has played against the Emirates Stadium side 13 times – winning ten, drawing three and scoring 13 times.

It is a millstone of a record that looms large over their build up every time Arsenal take on one of their major title challengers. And these miserable numbers were trotted out again before Chelsea’s visit to Emirates Stadium on Monday night.

It was the same sort of thing a fortnight earlier when Wenger’s men travelled to Old Trafford – and the result was all too familiar. But that does not mean the dynamic of the Big Three has stayed the same.

While they have their frailties, Arsenal are certainly stronger and older this season than in previous years. The Frenchman argues that time is working on his side. As Wenger philosophised in his opening line, everything changes… always. Maturity eventually turns into plain old age and is replaced the youth of yesterday.

Arsenal fans simply can’t wait for that shift to occur.

“I believe that my players are quite solid mentally,” said the manager. “But they have not won yet and that is a mental hurdle everyone in life has to get over.

“One day you want to win and you show that you can win. But for that you need to be tough. That makes you even stronger but you still need to believe.

“Remember I've seen the Frank Lampards and Rio Ferdinands at 20 with West Ham,” he went on. “They went down to the second tier.

“Do not forget these Arsenal players at 20 went to the semi-final of the Champions League, the final some of them. So they have the mental strength.

“We have had an opportunity to win the title in recent years and, OK, we didn't win it. But we are in a strong position now, why should we worry whether we can do it or not?

“We need a big win, yes. And Chelsea can be an opportunity, of course. It is certainly something that will speed up the maturing of the team.

“Scared is a big word. But we have played with a little bit of restriction in the past. It's down to the fact that the team wants to do so well, they are so keen to prove everybody wrong. That creates a little bit of a handbrake feeling in the team. But we will naturally get rid of that slowly.

“To be in a race for the title we know that to beat Chelsea, Man United and Man City at home will be vital.”

Wenger is clear on that point – Emirates Stadium will decide Arsenal’s League position. If you leave those defeats at Chelsea and Manchester United on their record but turn the home defeats against West Brom, Newcastle and Tottenham into victories then they would be seven points clear going into Christmas.

All of Arsenal’s six-pointers take place in North London from now on. Win those – and keep up that very decent away record – then they could well be champions.

Wenger’s injury list is about as light as it has been all season. Lukasz Fabianski (hip) and Abou Diaby (ankle) would have been involved against Stoke if the weather had not intervened. That postponement also allowed Cesc Fabregas and Robin van Persie to work on their match sharpness.

Kieran Gibbs (ankle) is out until the start of January and Thomas Vermaelen (Achilles) won’t return before the back-end of the month – though this has been wrongly reported as a ‘new blow’ for the Belgian. It is just a case of Wenger being cautious in his estimation of a player who has suffered a set-back earlier in his recuperation. Manuel Almunia (ankle) is still out.

Chelsea are on a wretched run that has seen them take six points from their last seven games. The spell started at the beginning of November when assistant Ray Wilkins left Stamford Bridge. His dismissal has been cited as the major reason for their decline but surely the absence of Lampard and John Terry must be equally important. Drogba has also been struggling for form, possibly due to the effects of malaria.

However all three were on the pitch a fortnight ago when the Ivorian striker missed a last-minute penalty at Tottenham that could have sent them top of the table. The postponement of last Sunday’s clash with Manchester United means Lampard, in particular, will lack playing time. The Englishman has had an outstanding injury record since arriving at Stamford Bridge. His absence has coincided with a decline few people predicted.

“It was a surprise because they looked for a long time unbeatable,” admitted Wenger. “But they remain a strong team and we consider them a side we want to beat. During the season, any team has a period where they have a little bit less good results and that happened to Chelsea.

"But let's not focus too much on any weakness of Chelsea because that would not be right. They've experienced players, they always deliver good games against us so I don't expect them to come to the Emirates and lie down.

"To beat Chelsea we will have had to have deliver a top-class team performance. We need to add something to our last two performances and I'm hopeful we can do that at home.

"It's a very important game for both teams,” concluded Wenger. “But for us it is a hurdle that can strengthen our belief.

“I’ll consider it a psychological boost if we beat them.”

And, of course, a change for the better.

Paying In Blood: The Credit Card Knife

The credit card knife is a nonfunctional credit card that can fold into a weapon to stab someone and/or open annoying clamshell packaging. Just don't lose a finger!.

It weighs just 13 grams, is only 2mm thick and features a stainless steel blade with a healthy 65mm cutting edge and a short serrated edge on the opposite side. When folded away a built-in sheath prevents you from accidentally touching the sharp blade.

They go on sale next month for $23, which I think we can all agree is a small price to pay to be able to, uh, carry a knife in your wallet? I really have no idea.

Arsenal vs Stoke city postponement

Arsenal's Premier League match against Stoke was postponed on Saturday after a deluge of snow hit London.

Approximately three inches of snow fell in just half-an-hour, prompting referee Lee Mason to call the game off just after midday (UK time).

The Gunners official Club photographers were at Emirates Stadium to bring these fantastic images.

EPL: Manchester Utd vs Arsenal 1-0

By Richard Clarke

Arsenal were knocked off the top of the Premier League table after a narrow 1-0 defeat at Manchester United on Monday night.

The goal had more than a touch of good fortune about it. Nani’s cross deflected on to the head of Ji-Sung Park four minutes before half-time, though the Korean’s reaction was razor-sharp.

Manchester United also missed a second-half penalty when Wayne Rooney blazed over the bar.

Those were the major moments of the game. In between them, there was little to split the sides. Arsenal’s performance was combative and controlled. Though we have said it before, on another night they would have gleaned something from the game.

Yes rookie keeper Wojciech Szczesny made more saves than Edwin van der Sar but this is Old Trafford and the volume of the travelling Arsenal fans at full time suggested they still had pride in their side after this evening.

A fifth defeat of the season is a big blow to Arsenal’s title hopes but this performance means they can still claim that very quality - hope – for the remainder of the campaign.

The stand-out team news was the selection of Szczesny in goal. Lukasz Fabianski had damaged his hip in the final seconds of the win over Partizan Belgrade last Wednesday and so his compatriot took the gloves for the first time in a Premier League game.

Cesc Fabregas had been out with a hamstring problem since the 2-0 defeat in Braga last month. He was a significant doubt in the days before this game and began on the bench.

Otherwise Wenger shuffled his squad as he has done throughout the past month.

This game was an opportunity for Arsenal. They came to Old Trafford as the Premier League leaders but had yet to attain the kudos of a side with true title aspirations. That would change with a win this evening.

In the first half, they would never really find a fluency and would lose a goal but they were always competitive.

In the eighth minute, Van der Sar’s quick clearance found Rooney. The England striker turned sharply and his deflected shot was clutched by Szczesny with Park in close attendance.

The play was pretty even but the chances – such as they were - went to the home side.

Midway though the half, Darren Fletcher’s cross was aimed towards Rooney but Sebastien Squillaci intervened. The Frenchman’s header was weak and found Nani on the right of the area. His volley flew inches past the far post. It was by far the clearest chance of a tense opening quarter.

Just before the half-hour, Manchester United had a major shout for a penalty. Nani swung a cross over from the left and, as Chamakh stooped to nod the ball clear, it only brushed his head but hit his hand. Referee Howard Webb waved play on. Just as he had when Rafael blocked off Chamakh in the area earlier on.

Arsenal were holding their own but had not created a chance worthy of the name. Yet Manchester United were hardly carving the visitors apart.

In fact when they took the lead four minutes before the break, it required a healthy portion of luck.

Nani drove in-field with Clichy in close attendance and tried to cross the ball. His effort deflected off the Frenchman but Park reacted quickly and guided a header over Szczesny. It dropped agonisingly beyond the Arsenal keeper and into the net.

In a tight, fiercely-contested game, it was a huge moment. Arsenal went into the break feeling slightly aggrieved.

Tomas Rosicky thumped a cross-shot just wide in the opening moments of the second half. And, after Alex Song had nodded Rooney’s ball across his own goal and over the bar, Nasri fired across goal only for Van der Sar saved at the near post.

Arsenal had upped the ante but Manchester United had been breaking quickly all night with long ball over the top. With the visitors chasing the game, this played into their hands.

In the 54th minute, Rooney fed Anderson and the Brazilian’s toe-poke was wonderfully batted away by Szczesny. His best save of the night so far.

A couple of minutes later Van der Sar made his first real stop. Nasri’s low cross-shot was turned into the path of Chamakh by the Dutchman. For a second the Moroccan had the goal at his mercy but Nemanja Vidic slid in to block as the Arsenal striker prodded a shot towards goal.

Wenger brought on Fabregas and Robin van Persie for Wilshere and Rosicky. The away side were now pushing down the pedal but, when the Dutchman just failed to scramble home Sagna’s cross, you sensed it was not to be Arsenal’s night.

Anderson fired just wide with the right back lying prostrate after a high challenge from Rio Ferdinand.

Then, in the 72nd minute, Manchester United should have killed the game. On the right of the area, Nani tussled with the sliding Clichy. The Portuguese winger dragged the ball back on to the hand the Frenchman was leaning on and the assistant referee indicated a spot-kick. It was the fifth penalty awarded against Arsenal in their last eight trips to Old Trafford.

Often they are decisive but this one was missed. Inexplicably, Rooney thundered his effort high over the bar from 12 yards.

It was the impetus Arsenal needed and Wenger added pace to his side by replacing Arshavin with Walcott.

But, as the seconds ticked by, Manchester United were defending deep and making the better chances on the break.

From one, in the 88th minute, Rooney tried to chip Szczesny. The Pole stretched his huge frame and batted the ball aside.

In final seconds of normal time, Walcott’s drifting cross was headed away from Van Persie by Ferdinand at the far post.

Manchester United were now closing the shutters and Arsenal could not prise them open.

There was one final half-chance when Chamakh nodded on and Walcott blazed over the bar.

But, despite a decent performance, this was just not Arsenal’s night.

CL: Arsenal vs Partizan Belgrade 3-1

Arsenal moved into the last 16 of the Champions League with a laboured 3-1 win over Group H whipping boys Partizan Belgrade at Emirates Stadium.

Successive away defeats to Shakhtar Donetsk and Braga had left the Gunners - who opened their European campaign with three straight victories - still needing a result to secure safe passage through to the knockout stages for the 11th successive season.

After a lacklustre start, Robin van Persie fired the home side ahead from the penalty spot - his first goal of the season - and after Cleo had netted a shock equaliser, substitute Theo Walcott volleyed Arsenal back into the lead before man-of-the-moment Samir Nasri swept home a third.

Arsenal finished the game with 10 men when defender Bacary Sagna was shown a red card for a professional foul on 85 minutes.

Despite maintaining a 100% home record, Arsene Wenger knows those poor away performances could yet come back to haunt his side, who finished runners-up to Shakhtar and so will face either Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich or Schalke in the last 16.

Van Persie, taking the captain's armband in the absence of the injured Cesc Fabregas, was deployed in a deeper role behind Marouane Chamakh, with Nasri out wide but with a license to roam.

However, despite having plenty of possession, Arsenal lacked any real creativity while Almami Moreira looked lively for the visitors, whose only goal in the Champions League so far had come against Arsenal in Belgrade.

Nasri - whose fine brace against Fulham had sent Arsenal top of the Barclays Premier League on Saturday - crafted an opening from the right when his cross was headed over by Chamakh.

On 15 minutes, full-back Kieran Gibbs turned his ankle badly and was taken off on a stretcher, but managed to return to the action only to eventually be replaced by Emmanuel Eboue.

As the half-hour mark approached, Arsenal - who travel to Manchester United on Monday night - were gifted the opening goal when Marko Jovanovic upended van Persie after Alex Song had burst into the Partizan penalty area.

The Dutchman took the spot-kick himself to fire home his first goal since the final day of last season.

Partizan - nicknamed the Steamrollers and who had lost all five European ties so far - could easily have let their heads drop, but continued to try to attack. Brazilian striker Cleo got clear down the right, but his cross into the danger zone was hacked away.

Van Persie played in Chamakh when he capitalised on a mistake by captain Mladen Krstajic, but for once this season the 10-goal Moroccan got the ball stuck under his feet and keeper Vladimir Stojkovic collected.

Given his current form, Nasri would have been expected to bury the ball when it dropped to him from van Persie's knockdown some 10 yards out at the start of the second half - but the French midfielder fired his shot high over the bar.

Arsenal's defensive frailties were exposed again when Partizan scored a shock equaliser on 52 minutes. The ball was worked down the left and then through to Cleo, some 20 yards out. He was given the space to turn and fire a shot goalwards, which deflected off the lunging Sebastien Squillaci and looped over Lukasz Fabianski.

The atmosphere was flat as the home fans became somewhat anxious another disappointment lay ahead. With 24 minutes left, Wenger looked to inject fresh life into the attack as he sent on Walcott, replacing the ineffective Andrey Arshavin.

The England winger was blocked on the edge of the area by Krstajic, which earned the Partizan skipper a yellow card. Nasri whipped the free-kick over the wall, with Stojkovic making a fingertip save.

The keeper, though, could do little as, on 73 minutes, Walcott lobbed the ball into the far corner after it fell to him on the right side of the area.

Chamakh was replaced by Nicklas Bendtner and the Dane had a hand in Arsenal's third after a neat exchange of passes with Song on the edge of the area fed Nasri - and the Frenchman sidestepped his marker as he swept the ball into the far corner.

There was late drama as Sagna was sent off for tripping Alexander Lazevski after being deemed last man by Italian referee Paolo Tagliavento.

Radosav Petrovic struck the free-kick, right on the edge of the area, goalwards - but Fabianski made a fine save.

EPL: Arsenal vs Fulham 2-1

Two magical goals from Samir Nasri rescued Arsenal as they survived another wasteful performance at the Emirates Stadium to move top of the Premier League.

The France star's jaw-dropping composure was in stark contrast to that of his team-mates, who almost threw away another three points in front of their own fans.

Nasri put them ahead early on but a sickening clash of heads between Laurent Koscielny and Sebastien Squillaci allowed Diomansy Kamara to equalise before Nasri netted a glorious winner.

With Manchester United's match postponed due to the big freeze and Chelsea held by Everton, the victory sent Arsenal a point clear at the summit.

But this was far from a champion performance, more from a side that had lost their last two home league games.

The Gunners announced before the match that their players and directors had agreed to donate their day's wages to Centrepoint.

They had been less than charitable down the years to Fulham, who had never won at Arsenal in more than a century of trying.

That wait looked set to continue when Nasri's spectacular opener put the home side ahead in the 14th minute.

Andrey Arshavin pounced on Aaron Hughes' error before feeding the France star, who sold two sublime dummies before lashing the ball into the top corner.

Nasri was already guilty of a glaring miss after more superb work by the rampant Arshavin, who was running the show two days after helping his native Russia win the right to host the 2018 World Cup.

The first chance of the game had fallen to the striker, his close-range volley blocked by Mark Schwarzer, who had looked certain to join Arsenal in January before signing a new contract with Fulham on Thursday.

Arshavin and Nasri continued to pull the strings - the latter tormenting recalled Fulham youngster Matthew Briggs, who was withdrawn for Chris Baird.

But Marouane Chamakh and Alex Song were both guilty of more profligate play that would come back to haunt the Gunners, whose offside trap was looking particularly suspect.

On the half-hour mark, Squillaci and Koscielny collided going for the same ball and Clint Dempsey took full advantage of the carnage to slide in Kamara, who sidefooted home.

Koscielny was in a bad way and was carried off on a stretcher to be replaced by Johan Djourou.

Both sides should have scored on the stroke of half-time, Chamakh powering a header straight at Schwarzer from Bacary Sagna's brilliant run and cross, and Kamara hitting the legs of Lukasz Fabianski after being played in behind by Dickson Etuhu.

Tomas Rosicky hooked a 52nd-minute volley wide as Arsenal tried to build some momentum after the restart.

Arshavin's dancing feet and near-post drive brought another good stop by Schwarzer but Fulham were refusing to be overawed and saw plenty of the ball themselves.

Etuhu sent a free header wide from Simon Davies' corner before Arsenal withdrew Rosicky for Robin van Persie.

The home fans' frustration grew when Song wasted all his good work outmuscling John Pantsil by blazing over the top.

Fulham were denied a shock lead in the 70th-minute when a corner was deflected to Zoltan Gera, whose header was cleared off the line.

Gera then sent a spectacular overhead kick wide before Kamara was sacrificed for Andy Johnson and Wilshere was withdrawn for Theo Walcott.

Arsenal's change paid off in spectacular fashion with 15 minutes remaining, a brilliant flowing move seeing Van Persie square for Nasri.

The Frenchman still had men to beat but did so with some unbelievable footwork, rounding Schwarzer and pirouetting to net from a tight angle.

The visitors proved they were far from beaten when Etuhu dragged narrowly wide minutes later but Chamakh shoulkd have killed them off when he sent a shot over on the turn.

Nasri looked to be struggling, signalling he wanted to come off, but Arsenal had used all their substitutions and he played on.

Fulham poured forward and the home defence was definitely creaking, with Gera's well-struck volley forcing a fine Fabianski save.

Eddie Johnson came on for Danny Murphy for the closing moments but Arsenal held on.

Arsene Wenger today declared there was even more to come from Samir Nasri after the midfielder's two magical goals sent Arsenal top of the Premier League.

"It was a combination of touch, intelligence, special talent and calmness as well,'' he said. "He needed to be patient to finish on both occasions and he did that very well. I'm happy because he had a game that was, at the start, only based on coming to the ball. But now he has more variation in his game: turns, runs in behind without the ball, and as well coming to the ball and taking it to his feet. So his game is improving and he is, of course, more efficient.''

Nasri has certainly been Arsenal's player of the season and few in the entire Premier League have performed as impressively.

"It's always difficult to compare,'' Wenger added. "But what is important when you are a manager is you want to get the best out of a player and I always was a strong believer in him. Many people questioned me when I took him here but he is showing that he is an exceptional talent and I think there is more to come from him.''

Admitting his defence looked "vulnerable'', Wenger insisted Arsenal were good enough to win the title.

"We are good enough to go on, that is for sure,'' said Wenger, who revealed Laurent Koscielny had suffered concussion in the sickening clash of heads with team-mate Sebastien Squillaci which led to the Fulham goal. "As you see, every single team struggles to be consistent. At the moment, we are where we are despite having lost three games. Today, you could see again every game is a cup final. And if you're not completely up for it, you don't take the three points.

"We have the spirit, we have the quality but we face tough opponents. And it will be down, as I have said already many times here, to consistency. We are far from winning the championship yet. The only thing I can say: we have the desire and the spirit to fight for it. Will it be good enough? We'll have the answer in May.''

Fulham boss Mark Hughes claimed Nasri was the only difference between the sides.

"Obviously, the boy Nasri has been playing at the top of his form in recent weeks,'' said Hughes, who revealed young full-back Matthew Briggs was substituted after taking a knock and being given a torrid time by the Frenchman. "I think we probably edged it in terms of chances we created and pressure and momentum that we built during the game.

"But, as most top teams have, they have individuals who can win the game for their team when, possibly, the team isn't functioning as well. Nasri is an excellent footballer, great feet, and once he gets in those positions in the area it's very difficult to stop him.

"From our point of view, we're happy with the performance. I thought we showed real belief in what we were trying to do today, took the game to Arsenal and caused them problems. At the end of the game, the crowd were asking for the final whistle.''

NEEDLE TO THE VEIN!: A LEGO Syringe

The most difficult part of this design was actually getting the colors right. The rarest part is not, in fact, the chrome silver antenna, but the 8-long dark gray Technic axle. Generally, even-length Technic axles are black and odd-length axles are dark gray. The dark gray 8-long axle was included, so far as I can tell, in only one kit. And dark gray is the only color in which all the plunger parts are available. And this is the only plunger design I’ve come up with that satisfies me.

Here’s the parts list:

2 Plate 2 x 2 Round (#4032), Black
1 Plate 2 x 2 Round (#4032), Dark-Gray
1 Technic Axle 3 with Stud (#6587), Dark-Gray
1 Technic Axle 8 (#3707), Dark-Gray
1 Antenna 6H Chrome (#104), Silver
1 Bar 4L Light Sabre Blade (#30374), Trans-Red
2 Brick 2 x 2 Round (#3941), Trans-Red
1 Dish 2 x 2 Inverted (#4740), Trans-Red
1 Brick 1 x 1 Round with Hollow Stud (#3062B), Trans-White
6 Brick 2 x 2 Round (#3941), Trans-White
2 Plate 2 x 2 Round (#4032), Trans-White
1 Plate 2 x 4 (#3020), Trans-White

Anyway, if you don’t have the parts and want to build one, kits with Trans-Red elements for the “blood” version are available in my Etsy store.

TRON Light Cycle Replicas.

Remember the replica Light Cycles that Parker Brothers Choppers (not to be confused with the makers of Monopoly, Clue and Sorry!) were selling commissions for on eBay? Well the first couple have been made, and there's a video to prove it. Also, that aliens exist, BUT THE GOVERNMENT WON'T RELEASE THAT ONE.

The bike is supposed to be street legal, but it appears to have very little steering and it looks like it would lever over if you lean at all. The bike weighs 474 pounds and is a bit over 100 inches long and 23-inches wide. There are four of the ten bikes built left and they are going for $55,000 each now.

They do look impressive to say the least, although I was more than a little disappointed nobody took one full throttle. What is this, amateur hour? I'd have taken that puppy to light-speed(!!!!!!!!) AND THEN TURNED MY ROCKET PACK TO 11. Just sayin', they don't call me Evil Geeknievel for nothing! Actually, nobody calls me that. I did get called a wanker last night though, so there's that. Knock first -- you know the lock is broken!.

Anyway, some talented craftsman is selling the Tardis pull-out bed he made for his son because he's grown up and doesn't want to sleep in a phone-booth time-machine spaceship anymore. ????? YOU'RE NEVER TOO OLD TO SLEEP IN A PHONE-BOOTH TIME-MACHINE SPACESHIP! Are you, Doctor? Doctor? *poking with a Sonic Screwdriver* Uh-oh.

See what I did there with his name? I managed to smash "ice" onto the end. That's the kind of stuff they don't teach you in blogging college, folks. Nope, that's the kind of literary mastery you can only gain from years of sticking made-up words into crossword puzzles.

You think I'm above adding extra letter-squares off the side of a puzzle? YOU DON'T KNOW ME! This is a giant 26-foot Optimus Prime ice sculpture from Zürich, Switzerland. God, what I wouldn't give to dismember that SOB with a barrage of stone-filled snowballs.

Carling Cup: Arsenal vs Wigan 2-0

Arsenal moved into the semi-finals of the Carling Cup with victory over Wigan at a freezing Emirates Stadium.

The Gunners missed several good chances before they took the lead on the stroke of half-time through an own goal from Latics skipper Antolin Alcaraz.

Wigan lost Victor Moses to a suspected broken wrist and Nicklas Bendtner's close-range effort on 67 minutes kept Arsene Wenger's men on the road to Wembley.

Earlier, Bendtner - recalled to the starting XI alongside Robin van Persie and Theo Walcott - missed a great chance to take an early lead when Bendtner failed to connect with his free header at the far post from Van Persie's deep free-kick.

Wigan tried to knock the ball around crispy as Moses darted down the left and cut back inside to the Arsenal penalty area before drilling a low shot into the side netting.

Emmanuel Eboue's careless backpass from the halfway line allowed Mauro Boselli to scamper clear, but fortunately for the Arsenal defender the Argentina forward was pushed wide and eventually the attack broke down.

Carlo Vela's angled drive was deflected out for a corner which Laurent Koscielny flicked over as Arsenal upped the tempo.

The Mexican was put through again on 26 minutes, this time by Van Persie's clever backheel, but as the keeper committed himself, Vela's chip curled just wide of the empty net.

Wigan defender Steve Gohouri showed great composure to chest the ball back to his keeper after it was lofted through the six-yard box.

However, when Maynor Figueroa bodychecked Walcott, referee Martin Atkinson immediately reach for his back pocket.

There was then a brief stoppage as Moses received treatment from an awkward fall in the build-up to Arsenal's counter-attack, landing on his wrist.

The England youth international was carried off on a stretcher, replaced by Charles N'Zogbia.

Arsenal appealed for handball against Figueroa as Van Persie looked to collect a chip into the Wigan box, but neither the referee nor his assistant were interested, which replays suggested they should have been.

Arsenal went ahead on 42 minutes through an own goal.

Walcott's corner caused all sorts of problems in the Wigan six-yard box, with Alcaraz - just back from suspension - flicking the ball into the net under pressure from Bendtner.

There were some anxious moments for Arsenal at the start of the second half when Van Persie needed treatment after being sandwiched between two Wigan defenders as he tried to connect with Vela's cross into the six-yard box.

Walcott weaved down the right and chipped the ball back for Bendtner, but the Denmark striker headed wide.

Wigan continued to come forward and caused some concern around the Arsenal penalty box.

As the hour mark passed, the temperature continued to plummet with snow swirling around inside the Emirates Stadium basin.

Arsenal looked to have secured safe passage to the semi-finals when Vela was put clear down the left, and his low centre was bundled in by Bendtner from two yards after 67 minutes.

Walcott got away again down the right, beating the advancing keeper and pushing the ball out to Vela, but the angle was too tight as Ali Al Habsi recovered to save on the line.

With the tie now safe, Arsenal took off Van Persie and Jack Wilshere, replaced by Craig Eastmond and Samir Nasri.

Walcott almost made it three when he cut in from the left and curled a low effort just wide of the far post.

It was all too much excitement for one young fan, who sprinted down the touchline to shake hands with Wenger before being escorted away by stewards.

In stoppage time, Nasri broke into the box and rounded the keeper, but his shot was cleared off the line by James McArthur.

Wenger: We must fight on

Arsene Wenger maintains Arsenal still have work ahead before they can put the champagne on ice and dream of Carling Cup glory at Wembley after beating Wigan 2-0 to reach the semi-finals.

Wenger insisted ''You have seen it in the Premier League, and tonight with West Ham, it can happen to Manchester United, to Chelsea and to us this season.

''We have to accept there are no guarantees, even if we are in the semi-finals, that we will win the trophy - you have to fight in every single game to win.''

Wenger continued: ''The supporters always want more, which is completely natural. You cannot say that [a first trophy] is not important, but we should also not make obsession of that.

''We want to focus on the quality of our performances, and the rest will be the consequences of those performances. The major trophies are the Champions League and the [domestic] championship, but if we can win this as well, we will take it.

''We want to win trophies and be at the top, but you can only do as well as you can. At the moment, we are at the end of November and are in quiet a good position in all of the competitions.''

Wenger had made several changes for quarter-final, including starts for Robin van Persie, Theo Walcott and Bendtner. The Arsenal manager felt his much-changed team produced a composed display.

''We are in the semi-final, and did the job on a cold night when we did not give chances away,'' Wenger said. ''We wanted to qualify and give some competition to some players who needed it, so we achieved both targets.''

For van Persie, it was a first start since the end of August as the Dutch forward continued his rehabilitation from an ankle injury.

Wenger said: ''Robin showed his class, and still needs games because he has been out for a long time. It was positive he played for 70 minutes tonight and let's hope he has no reaction, then he will become stronger and stronger.''

Latics boss Roberto Martinez felt his side had shown great character, but admitted they were always up against it. To add to their disappointment, striker Mauro Boselli limped off with a knee problem, while Moses could be out for up to six weeks.

''It has been a great competition for us, but today was probably a game too many,'' Martinez said. ''There were a couple of performances from players like James McArthur, Ben Watson and youngster Callum McManaman, which were positive, but it was a tough night.''

Martinez, though, insisted his squad would bounce back as they battle for Premier League survival.

''Sometimes you need to earn your own luck, and I don't want us to be a team which feels sorry for ourselves. Now is one of the key moments, we need to regroup and act like men. We are short in numbers, but not in character.

''It would be very easy to feel sorry for ourselves, but if we carry on working with levels have been showing, luck can change very quickly.''

Back To The Footwear: Nike DeLorean Dunks

Inspired by the DeLorean DMC-12, Nike 6.0 Introduces the Limited-Edition DeLorean Nike Dunk, a Fusion of Innovation and Style. Influenced by the DMC-12′s aerodynamic design and trademark characteristics, Nike reinterpreted the car’s sleek stainless steel exterior into a matte silver, no-sew constructed upper while also taking cues from the gull-wing doors on the bottom eyestay.

The shoe’s outsole references the Delorean’s tail lights and the DMC-12′s rear window shades reappear as graphic lines on the heel replacing the traditional stitches. Meanwhile, the Belfast stamp on the tongue is a nod to the Irish factory that originally produced the vehicle.

Like the rebellious, rare and flashy DMC-12, the DeLorean Nike Dunk champions the unexpected by making a statement. This super limited-edition shoe will be available starting on November 26th, Black Friday, at Store.Nike.com, Niketown locations, Salvation (Irvine, CA) and select nationwide retailers.

EPL: Aston Villa vs Arsenal 2-4

Arsenal survived a second-half onslaught from Aston Villa to regain - at least temporarily - the leadership of the Barclays Premier League.

The Gunners looked to be cruising to victory after dominating the opening 45 minutes and netting through Andrey Arshavin and Samir Nasri.

But Villa were transformed in the second period and Ciaran Clark struck twice either side of Marouane Chamakh's 10th goal of the campaign before Jack Wilshere's injury-time clincher.

It enabled Arsene Wenger's side to end an unhappy week on a high note after the derby defeat by Tottenham and the Champions League setback away to Braga.

Arsenal played some superb flowing football with Arshavin and Nasri a constant threat.

But their soft under belly, which had seen them throw away a two-goal lead against Spurs, was almost exposed again.

Ashley Young posed more of a threat in the second period while Clark showed his potential.

Arsenal were almost gifted the lead in the opening 30 seconds after sloppy play by Stephen Warnock.

He played the ball straight into the path of Arshavin who released Chamakh inside the box.

Villa keeper Brad Friedel partially blocked the shot but it needed James Collins to make a goal-line clearance.

The Gunners were first to settle and Tomas Rosicky squandered a clearcut opening.

Nasri was the creator with a perfectly weighted pass to leave Rosicky with only Friedel to beat but he drilled his shot across the face of goal.

The Villa midfield was being by-passed by the quality passing and movement of Wenger's side.

Arsenal continued to dominate and Friedel saved from Rosicky away to his right although he did not make full contact on his shot.

Villa were being pulled apart almost at will and Arshavin had a shot deflected for a corner after exchanging passes with Chamakh.

Nasri dragged a shot just past the post as the home side hung on desperately.

It was 26 minutes before Villa created a worthwhile chance - and Ashley Young should have given them the lead.

Stewart Downing's dangerous, inswinging centre found it's way to Young unmarked inside the six yard box at the post but he sent his shot over the bar.

Vill tried to get a foothold in the game and Laurent Koscielny had to be alert to cut out a dangerous cross from the overlapping Warnock after good play by Bannan.

But it was no surprise when Arshavin put the Gunners ahead after 39 minutes.

Arshavin picked the ball up on the left and cut inside and past the challenge of Richard Dunne before firing a low shot into the far corner of the net.

Nasri could have made it 2-0 a minute later when he slipped the ball wide of Friedel but drilled his effort into the side netting.

Friedel made a superb save to keep out Chamakh's header from Bacary Sagna's cross.

But a minute before half-time Nasri made it 2-0 with a superb volley direct from Arshavin 's corner.

Houllier opted for a half-time change with Nathan Delfouneso replacing Robert Pires and giving support up front to John Carew.

After 52 minutes Clark reduced the arrears with his first senior goal for the club.

Bannan's cross was only half cleared by Sebastien Squillaci to Clark on the edge of the box and his left-footed drive flew past Lukasz Fabianski into the roof of the net.

Villa were transformed after their ineffective first half performance but in the 56th minute Chamakh restored Arsenal's two goal advantage.

Rosicky played the ball into the path of the striker who managed to flick the ball under Friedel's body.

Houllier brought on Stephen Ireland for Carew after 66 minutes.

Clark had a golden chance to net a second goal but screwed his shot wide from 10 yards out.

But after 71 minutes the youngster did strike again.

Ashley Young's corner was flicked on by Dunne and Clark forced the ball over the line.

Chamakh was yellow carded for a challenge on Dunne. Friedel denied Chamakh on the edge of the box after being freed by Arshavin.

But the Gunners looked nervy when Villa ventured forward in a tense finish.

Wilshere made it 4-2 from Chamakh's cross in injury-time.

Midfielder Jack Wilshere admitted Arsenal were relieved to run out 4-2 winners at Aston Villa after they had let arch rivals Tottenham come back to win last weekend.

Wilshere told Sky Sports 2: ''I think there's always going to be that (uncertainty) especially after last week. It was a good ball from Chamakh and I'm happy to get my first goal.''

Wilshere praised the way his team-mates had applied themselves this season. He said: ''I think it's down to hard work.''

Arsenal boss Wenger was satisfied to see his side go top, temporarily or otherwise.

''It's a good weekend because we can relax now a bit and look at the other results,'' he said. ''You can only do your job and that's what we did today. It was a strong performance against a Villa side that's dangerous.''

Wenger admitted he was slightly concerned after leading 2-0 at the break and conceding, just a week after being stung by a Tottenham comeback.

''With 2-0 at half-time it happened again, it was quickly back to 2-1, but this time we managed to find the resources to keep scoring goals. At the end of the day overall it was a good game and a good performance from us.''

Villa manager Gerard Houllier admitted his side were always playing catch up after a poor first half performance.

He said: ''We were poor in the first half. Whether it was because we showed them too much respect, or lacked experience, I don't know. We never got started. We were a different team in the second half, showed more energy and took more risks.

''It's just a shame that when we got to 2-1 that we couldn't keep the score like that for 10 minutes because, after what happened to Arsenal last week, they would have been shaky.

''Their third goal was the pivotal moment of the game but overall we were beaten by a better team than ourselves, simple as that. The best thing to do as a team is to learn from that and the good thing is we did get a positive reaction in the second half.''

CL: Braga vs Arsenal 2-0

By Richard Clarke at Estadio Municipal de Braga

Arsenal must now beat Partizan Belgrade in the final game of Group H in order to be sure of qualification to the Knockout Stages of the Champions League.

Arsène Wenger's side are left playing brinkmanship after they slipped to defeat at Braga on Tuesday night.

Matheus sealed Arsenal's fate. With seven minutes remaining, the Brazilan broke through and kept his nerve to steer a shot beyond Lukasz Fabianski. With the final kick of the game, he held off two challenges to add a second.

The visitors were down to 10 men at the time - Emmanuel Eboue had been stretchered off and Wenger had used all his substitutes. In addition they had just been denied a seemingly clear penalty when Carlos Vela was tripped in the area.

After that thought-provoking defeat to Tottenham on Saturday, this was the last thing Arsenal needed.

There is comfort in the fact Belgrade have lost all the Group H games but it would appear that top spot is now gone given that Shakhtar only need a point at home to Braga.

It was another tough night for Wenger's men.

The manager's team selection tapped into the slate-wiping mood that had followed the weekend. He made seven changes in all.

Only Lukasz Fabianski, Denilson, Sebastien Squillaci and Cesc Fabregas remained from Saturday's side. Five of the seven omitted went to the bench meanwhile Gael Clichy (back) and Andrey Arshavin (rested) missed out entirely. Robin van Persie was left in London to work on his fitness.

The scene inside the Estadio Municipal de Braga was slightly surreal. This two-sided ground is carved into a quarry with a sheer rock face behind one goal and a grassy hill behind the other.

Coupled with that, the home side were playing in red shirts and white sleeves - a look taken from a former President's trip to Highbury in the 1920s. Meanwhile Arsenal were in yellow.

All very odd.

Kieran Gibbs was the main attacking threat for the visitors in the first 15 minutes.

In the opening seconds he reached the left-hand byline before crossing in the hope of finding Nicklas Bendtner at the far post. Moises cleared the danger.

In the eighth minute the Braga defender would head over the bar from Luis Aguiar's free-kick.

However Gibbs was still the focus. Aguiar headed another of his crosses clear and the full back forced Braga to scramble the ball away on a number of other occasions.

In the 18th minute Bendtner and Walcott set up Fabregas, who fired a shot over the bar.

On the half-hour, the captain saw his free-kick tipped over the bar by Felipe after Leandro Salino had fouled Emmanuel Eboue just outside the area. From the corner, Johan Djourou steered a shot wide at the far post.

To be honest, in the first 30 minutes there had been little pace or pattern about the game. But Arsenal had owned all the urgency and invention involved.

The game would pick up as half-time approached.

There was the merest sniff of a spark when Fabregas fed the scampering Walcott with a defence-splitting pass. The England winger beat Felipe to the ball but the keeper's sliding challenge cleared the danger.

Play switched to the other end and Lima's long-range snapshot forced Fabianski to dive full-length even though the ball went wide.

Eboue fouled Matheus on the left-hand touchline and Aguiar's free-kick was headed into the side-netting by Bendtner.

Five minutes before the break, Walcott broke clear and fired a shot beyond Felipe and the far post.

Suddenly, it seemed we had a game on our hands.

In the dying seconds, Bendtner was fouled 25 yards out and Fabregas thumped the free-kick wide. It was the final act of a largely forgettable first half but one in which Arsenal had been clearly the better side.

The second period started the same way, only this time Walcott missed the target with his free-kick.

Matheus dragged a shot wide for Braga in response but, once again, the game was settling into its altogether lethargic first-half groove.

It seemed that only a piece of individual skill or, more likely, a mistake, could provide the opening goal.

On the hour, the latter scenario nearly came to pass. Alan curled in a cross from the right and Squillaci could only nod his clearance to Aguiar, who fired a low shot inches wide of Fabianski's left-hand post. In the context of this game it was a massive moment.

Wenger sensed the need for change and brought on Samir Nasri for Fabregas, whose hamstring injury had made him touch-and-go to start. Chamakh replaced Bendtner soon afterwards.

Arsenal were still lively. Wilshere nearly dribbled his way through the entire Braga defence and Moises slid in to stop Rosicky's right-wing cross finding Bendtner at the near post.

But as the game went into the final 15 minutes, neither keeper had made a serious save.

That should have changed in the 78th minute when substitute Carlos Vela appeared to be tripped by Alberto Rodriguez in the area. But referee Viktor Kassai booked the Arsenal striker.

It got worse for Arsenal when Eboue was carried off with an injury and Arsenal were left a man short.

And then it worse again

The visitors pushed for the equaliser but were caught on the break with seven minutes left when Matheus broke through and steered his shot beyond Fabianski and into the far corner.

Wenger's men looked to find a way back but Matheus added a sparkling second on the break.

It was not a fair reflection on the game but matters are conspiring against Arsenal right now.

They need to turn the tide and quickly.
